Advantages: Allows anyone to tune a guitar exactly Disadvantages: none
I bought the QwikTune Guitar tuner about four years ago when I decided to take up playing the guitar again after nearly thirty years. There was a time, when my ears where much younger and I played four hours per day when I could tune a guitar solely by ear but nowadays I need a little help.
A digital guitar tuner gives a clear indication of the precise state of your tuning, so that even if you have the worst set of cloth ears you will still be able to tune a guitar to exactly concert pitch.
The Qwiktune TD1 is a slim plastic case which takes a 9 volt battery. On the front is an LCD display, three LEDs and three buttons.
On the side are standard quarter inch jack sockets, marked in and out, so that you can use the tuner with an electric guitar, in line to the amplifier.
The LCD display shows which string you are tuning ...
Advantages: Featurefull, Great Value Disadvantages: Bad battery life
I have used this tuner for guitar and bass for many years, as a bass player I find this to get the job done quickly and easily, It is not so efficient for guitar but is still a very good tuner for the price.
A positive point about this tuner is that it has 1/4" input and output sockets allowing it to be used between the guitar and amp which, for a tuner of this price range, is quite a useful feature.
My only issue with this tuner is that it uses a 9v battery which can be run down quickly if the tuner is accidentally left on. This is an easy mistake to make as the three main buttons on the tuner are raised and can be accidentally pressed, there is no power indicator to show the tuner is switched on
To conclude, this tuner is very good value for money and has excellent features including a microphone for tuning acoustic guitars. ...
Advantages: For alternate tunings, tune by plugging in directly or by mic Disadvantages: Often shows wrong notes
There's an Automatic Guitar tuner version of this (which is silver-coloured, not gold), but should you need a dBGDGD, drop-D or need to come down a semitone down from standard - something other than eBGDAE, then give this a look. As well as the display there are LED's to show whether you are flat/sharp (within 50 cents). Electric instruments can be plugged in directly at the top (thus you can tune quietly) whilst there is a built-in mic to pick up on the acoustics. Via the latter the device does struggle to pick up on the lower pitches, and when tuning, the note can often alternate between right and wrong - the wrong tends to be fifths for reasons which might trouble those new to playing an instrument. The on/off button is not that responsive, and sometimes the symbol indicating low on battery power shows when there is still some usage ...
