Toilet paper is something that most people don't care to talk about much in this country, I find, and despite our sometimes-lavatorial sense of humour, and despite the British affliction of not wanting to discuss bodily functions, it is something we all use everyday, I hope. There is such a variety to choose from that, I generally go for the cheapest. I think there should be a better way of wiping your bum these days, as using such vast amount of paper product is very environmentally unfriendly.
The ancient Romans used to use sponges on sticks, which could be rinsed out and used again, which sounds like a sound idea to me. Some cultures reserve their left hand for the dubious honour of bum wiping and simply wash their hands afterwards, another environmentally sound idea, also some jungle tribes favour large leaves rather than soft white rolls of fluffy tissue, which would also make sense as bog roll wouldn't last long in a rain forest. Historicaly speaking, those people living in the Northern parts of the world -in particularly, the Eskimos- used tundra moss when available in the summer months, and handfuls of snow during the balance of the year. Those living in coastal areas or tropical settings used mussel shells or old coconut shells, those living in the colonial times of America, when farming consisted of 75% of the U.S. practicing workforce used cobs of corn, or hung paper products in the form of mail order catalogues (Like that of Sears Roebucks, etc.). My favourite wartime improvisation for loo roll is the cut up newspaper, cut into six inch squares and threaded onto a piece of brown hairy string it is a wonderfully ecological method of reusing paper without, all the wasteful recycling costs. This also gives you something to read while you are in there.
Something to bear in mind, whilst your wiping your bum on the worlds heritage sites ;
Ancient forests are the planet's old-growth and original forests. According to the World Resources Institute, almost 80 per cent of the world's original forests have been degraded or completely destroyed. Much of this loss of ancient forests is due to human industrial use of these forests including logging, clearing for agricultural land, and oil, gas and hydroelectric development. This includes hacking down vast areas for use as paper pulp, for products such as toilet paper.
Having said all that if you really are that much of a softy that you have to have your fluffy white loo roll to wipe your bum on, then this stands up to scrutiny as well as any other I have tried It is quite a luxurious weave and, you get what you pay for in some respects when it come to toilet tissue. Some of the cheaper brands have the tendency to be quite fragile and you can put your finger right through, when performing the intended operation. This particular product, does not suffer from 'brownfinger' collapse, and is quite a sturdy beast for the sharpest of fingers and biggest of bottoms.

I think that some people may buy more expensive toilet paper because it is often a fashion statement in their bathroom. That is there are often several shades of colour to choose from to match the décor in your bathroom. I have only seen quilted velvet in white, so if you are a bit of an interior designer as well, you may be limited in this respect with this particular product, though it does say on the back of the packet, available in a variety of colours designed specifically to match you bathroom
Also I think that this particular brand whilst not particularly cheap does not look as posh as Andrex for example, which always looks tightly rolled on to the roll, is neatly cut and looks good on the dispenser. This one is a bit flabby and squashy, and not all that aesthetic if you have a neatly organised karhsi, and looks a bit scruffy to me, so thumbs down on that front.
I have this particular brand because it was on special offer, and like it, but I would only be tempted to but it again under similar circumstances, if it was BOG…OF, (BOGOF, buy one get one free), BOG that's meant to be a joke….as in Bog…karhsi, …maybe not. I believe in buying the cheapest even if it does result in the occasional bout of 'brownfinger'.

Of course there are a multitude of uses for toilet tissue, including the obvious. I have had a terrible cold all week and been blowing my way through rolls of my lovely quilted velvet because it was the only thing I had to hand, having run out of tissues, it performs admirably for the task with the added advantage of being able to shove the used bit in the centre of the roll, until you can be bothered to get up and flush all the snotty bits down the toilet.
I also use it to clean the lens of my digital camera, wipe the dipstick in my car, wipe my computer screen, and here are a few more uses I found whilst scouring the internet for the cardboard tubes inside. It's all part of being environmentally friendly.
I found these interesting suggestions for reusing the inside tube of your Quilted Velvet on the Internet.
One of the best parts of being frugal and ecologically aware and responsible (and the part that sometimes will get you the strangest looks) is finding uncommon uses for throwaway things.
Make fire starters. Stuff them full of shavings or small pieces of wood, then pour melted wax into them.
Use them as small logs by rolling paper, especially newspaper, tightly to fit Inside It burns longer than just paper.
Corral a tangle of electric cords by putting them through one tube before plugging them in.
Make bird cakes by adding seed to suet and stuffing a toilet paper roll with it. Thread a wire or cord through the centre and freeze. When you need it, peel the cardboard tube off and hang.
Glued to a base, they can hold pencils, knitting needles or chopsticks.
Cut into slices and decorate to make napkin rings.
Cover with Christmas paper to make Christmas crackers. Cut them a couple of inches longer than each end and tie with ribbon. With a sharp pair of scissors cut the tube in half with a jagged edge (looks like its exploded), wrap the two pieces together with wrapping paper, fasten one end and fill with sweets, etc. Fasten end, hang on christmas tree for children to pull.
Use as gift containers for small items like jewellery, pens, or gloves. Tape paper over ends and wrap with paper or decorate with markers.
I won't be buying Quilted Velvet again unless I have to, in fact I did not buy this last batch of nine, I spent most of last week blowing my nose through, they were a gift, I will be cutting up my old yellow pages and newspapers in true 'Blitz' style to do my bit for the environment.
Advantages: Soft and smooth feel. Does not tear easily, even when wet. Disadvantages: Probably will get used up quicker as there are few segments than the average roll.
Advantages: soft, fairly absorbant Disadvantages: more expensive thn other toilet papers, not sure if it is envioromentaly friendly
...is going to focus on Quilted Velvet produced by S.C.A Hygiene ,a German company who make all manner of hygiene products that are embarrassing to discuss but are much needed. History In ancient time's people used sponges as toilet paper. As recent as 1935 toilet paper was declared splinter free. It was only in 1942 two ply paper was invented. Quilted Velvet is marketed as a luxury toilet paper. Their marketing slogan is fun for your bum. Fun toilet ... ...insists it has to be quilted or triple thickness. He tries to test the softness in the packet. It is rather embarrassing having him feel up all the toilet paper packets just to make sure the loo roll is comfortable enough for his tender little botty! Don't get me wrong, I do like soft toilet paper. I hate the thin horrible scratchy cheapo stuff you get in public toilets and schools. That does hurt and I am not advocating that, but to me toilet roll ...

Advantages: Great packaging, embossed, 3 ply, lovely and soft, good price. Disadvantages: None.
...quite soft. These Quilted toilet rolls are made up of 3 plys of toilet tissue and this gives it a nice thick, quilted feel and it is very soft. I did find it to be softer and thicker than 2 ply tissues and it is embossed with a nice clover leaf pattern so it even looks nice in my bathroom! There are 165 sheets per roll which is a little less than most standard toilet rolls but then as these are thicker I did find that I needed to use less. When I ... ...had to 'double up' but this is not the case with this as it is thick enough to give me confidence when using it. This is normally around £2.30 but is currently on offer in Tesco stores for £1.50 and this runs until 19/05/2009. This is a very soft, luxurious toilet roll and it is definitely worth the price tag. I would highly recommend it and I am rating it 5/5 because it's a fantastic product. ...

Quick review of Quilted Velvet Toilet Tissue
While no opposer of innovation and improvement, I'm afraid the "new pattern" is terrible! As a user of the old pattern I had no problems, but the new one is so fragile that, rather than tear neatly across the perforations, it tends to simply pull apart rendering it useless. I could not believe it was by the same maker and, if I have the time and can be bothered, I shall contact the company's customer service dept to tell them in person. I cannot believe it was properly tested before launch.
I have no objection to a change in surface pattern but PLEASE not at the expense of strength. It no longer does the job for me! ...

Quick review of Quilted Velvet Toilet Tissue
My loo keeps getting blocked because I am using to much of it (quilted variety) because, well, it doesn't really do the job properly, so I end up using more than I should. Why is this? Because it is impregnated with a balm. I wouldn't recommend buying any brand of quilted toilet paper because it is all the same. I am trying to find the biodegradable type, but all the ones I've seen are too expensive. I guess I will need to shop around to find the best biodegradable for what I can afford. The manufacturers have a duty to provide a product which is kinder to the environment, not worse! ...

There's not too many things you can say about bog roll, after all you'd think its all about the same.
Well, I'm here to tell you different, as you know my little girls room is very important to me and I like to have it looking and smelling nice.
Double Velvettoilettissue is my all time favorite. I have tried the quilted versions and think that these are not as good. If you look at the roll itself you can see that on a double velvet roll the tissue is wound on tighter and that the roll is more compact, I think this gives you more tissue per roll and therefore is more economical.
The quiltedtissue types look thicker but are more bulkier and run out quicker.

Advantages: A fresh and pleasant aroma Disadvantages: Everyone spends longer in the bathroom!
Not one to be swayed by fancy advertising or gimmicky items I had a little laugh to myself whilst battling through the Sunday shoppers crowd at my local supermarket. What caused this merriment of mirth? It was Asda's own brand of Shades 'Aroma' bathroom tissue to give it its true marketed title. Well, I thought, I've tried double quilted, double velvet, extra thick, floral patterned and every rainbow coloured version of toilet roll...sorry, bathroom tissue, on sale ,so why not try this one.I didnt say anything to my family, and awaited their reaction, if at all they noticed. Hubby, initially thought it a bit of a corny idea but was suitably impressed. It even disguised the smell of the cigarettes that he 'doesnt' smoke whilst in the loo.....My daughters thought it quite cool and very feminine whilst my son thought it ok for wiping ...
