Like a lot of people, I still get spots in my twenties. I'm not overly bothered by this but I'd prefer not to have them in a perfect world!
I've tried quite a few remedies for spots, Oxy, Clerasil, own brands and they have all had their uses. What I have been looking for, for a while is a spot cream, ideally one that I don't have to leave one for X minutes, one that rubs in and isn't a gel as they dehydrate my skin with the alcohol. Having popped along to Boots, the counter assitant recommended Quinoderm cream. Now this is familiar, I used Quinoderm as a teenager and always found it effective but I thought it died the death and no longer made. I needed no more convincing, Quinoderm 50g tube at an amazing £2.55.
Quinoderm comes in 2 strengths now, Quinoderm 5 for sensitive skins and first time users and normal, bog standard, Quinoderm. Also available in the Quinoderm range is a fash wash, shower gel and
cleansing wipes, all were in boots and varied in price from £2.55 for the cream and £4.95 for the facial wash. Blue and red packaging is unique across the brand and very easily recognised too and it's equally appealling to both ladies and gents and my husband states he wouldn't be embarrassed to buy this!
The active ingrediant in Quinoderm is Benzoyl Peroxide, an ingrediant that drys out spots and the claim is that you can't buy a more effective spot rememdy, so I decided to put it to the test....
Upon first opening the tube, I was greeted by a rather noxious, chemical smell, akin to a smell of hospitals but I know with something that is going to be effective, you can't always expect the best smells in the world. I would describe the underlying smell as that of petroleum jelly, which combined with the hospital, makes for the old fashioned spot cream smell some of us of a certain age may remember.
The cream itself is a yellow tinged colour and when applied to a finger, the smell increases. The cream is non greasy and rubs in well, a word of caution, if you do decide not to rub in the cream straightaway, do not leave it too long on the face. The cream does go quite tacky, quite quickly and you end up not being able to rub it in and if you can. it requires vigorous rubbing likely to hurt your face! So, my advice, get it on to your skin quickly and use the pads of your fingers to rub in the cream with soft circular motions. This was the cream absorbs quickly and yes, the smell is detectable but after a while it does fade.
I used the cream as advised, 2-3 times a day. Results are expected in 2 weeks but it does say that it can take up to 2 months for a result. As with most spot remedies, this is standard so I didn't expect too much from Quinoderm in a short space of time. I started using Quinoderm on some really nasty spots on a Wednesday.
The cream initially did sting my skin when applied, nothing too bad though, easy to deal with as it doesn't last more than a few seconds, I do have sensitive skin but as I have used this before I decided against the Quinoderm 5, if you have sensitive skin then you do really need the Quinoderm 5 and not the regular formulation unless you have used it before.
After a few days, some of my red spots had cracked and dried becoming quite sore in places and indeed the skin surroundng the spots had become very very dry and cracked and no amount of moisturiser was helping in rehydrating my skin yet the smaller spots themselves were looking a lot better, almost gone in fact, this was after 3 days. I did continue with Quinoderm though on my bigger spots for another 4 days.
4 days later and my spots had virtually disappeared, I was impressed but something else had happend, my skin was now very very dry, in places it was cracked and it was very sore in places and like before, no amount of moisturiser was helping my skin. The skin was so cracked in places it bled when I touched it, not a nice look and I think certainly, I would prefer spots to looking like I had been dragged through a bramble bush. My chin was particularly affected badly. I stopped using Quinoderm at this point, thinking that after stopping using the cream, my skin would be likely to improve and clear up itself.
After 2 days, the redness and sore patches still remained. I was moisturising and patches that had been affected on my cheeks were starting to clear up yet my chin wasn't! I still persisted with my normal routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising and eventually, after 6 days, the area on my chin which had been so bad and so sore, became less inflammed and started to resemble something like normal.
I was certainly impressed with the ease that Quinoderm took to shift my spots but less than impressed with the fact it kind of peeled off my skin in sensitive areas. I was left with very sore skin that I have never experienced with a spot remedy. As I had used Quinoderm before, I was sure that the normal formulation would be fine for my skin and the counter assistant didn't ask whether I had sensitive skin or had used it before so it didn't click that this might be too strong for me.
I am unsure whether I'd use Quinoderm again. Yes, it was very effective but the side effects were horrible and probably worse than my spots were in the first place! If I were inclined to use Quinoderm again, I'd certainly opt for the Quinoderm 5 cream or use the facial wash as a stand alone treatment combined with my normal rountine.
Overall, I'd recommend Quinoderm for those with severe outbreaks but not for the more sensitive amongst us. Price wise, it's competitive to the £8.95 Freederm gel, so teenagers can afford to buy this and, if it doesn't work, it's not going to break the bank.

Review of Quinoderm Quinoderm
Advantages: It really works and you will notice much clearer, and spot-free skin. Disadvantages: It dries out the skin and it will bleach anything that comes into contact with your face.
