So where does Quip stand amidst all these Telecom companies? I hope to explain my analysis of Quip by my customer experiences with this company over the last two years and with some comparison of using other cheap telecoms together with some background information on the company.

Many of us have friends and family abroad and the need to keep in touch and make savings on telephone call charges is more of a necessity than simply going with what’s available as standard on your landline. The savings to be made are not only on International calls but with the advent of increased mobile phone usage; savings can be made on call charges to various networks too; as well as competitive rates on UK national calls.
In the last five years the UK has seen a surge in the number of Telecom companies promising massive discounts with call savings of up to 60% against BT; but whom do you go with? The choice available to the consumer is endless… Planet Talk, Axa, First Telecom (see separate opinion for details) SwiftCall, One-Tel, Communication 2000, etc, etc to name but a few. All the Telecom companies seem to offer massive savings on International calls but just how reliable is the service and what’s more important how often can you get your call routed?

It may surprise you to know that Quip is actually owned by BT! Quip is the marketing name and the company is actually called EEscape Ltd based in Milton Keynes in UK. In addition to BT, Quip is also owned by the company Unisys; a market leader in the field of telecommunications and IT! So, together with the expertise in cost-cutting telecommunication and software measures from Unisys and a trustable brand name as BT, this allows Quip to offer a neat and flexible telecoms package easily accessed via the internet.
Joining Quip --------------
Like many people I first came across Quip through my ISP provider; Lineone (now Tiscali) about 2 years ago thereby allowing me to make £5 worth of free phone calls and offering discounted rates thereafter. The application procedure was straightforward; you keep your existing landline and route your calls through Quip by pre-dialling a 4-digit number or using a dialler socket. All that was asked of you is that you purchase a Quip dialler socket for £20 so all your calls would automatically be routed through Quip automatically rather than your existing landline. When Lineone’s free Internet deal came to an end Quip the telecom company offered all it’s subscribers a £20 credit to compensate against the customers purchasing a Quip dialler for £20. Initially I decided that after my £20 call credit was over I’d quit Quip, but later decided to stay as after some initial teething problems with customer service the call quality had been fine and I had always connected first time to my International destinations; something that is not always the case as found with some Telecom companies such as Communication 2000 where call connection can be appalling!
To join Quip today ~ You can still join Quip today via their website or by calling the free phone number which I’ll list at the end of this opinion. Application via the net is straightforward; all that is required is your full UK address and a list of 3 telephone numbers you are most likely to use the service from e.g. home, work, mobile. You must also give details of your credit/debit card or arrange to pay your Quip bill monthly. When setting up the account you choose a credit limit, such as £25 a month up to a maximum of £35 a month. For example, if you choose £25 credit limit you cannot make more than £25 worth of calls a month. You only get charged for what calls you make in a month. I pay monthly via credit card. You have 24 hour access to your account via the website and at all times can see how many calls you’ve made in a month and the call charges via the ‘call reporter’. If you feel you are reaching your credit limit for that month, you can opt to pay the bill sooner rather than wait for the monthly billing date from Quip. You usually receive an e-mail each month from Quip letting you know your bill is ready, you can pay online or by telephone. One of the disadvantages I have found with Quip occasionally when say you reach your credit limit max, e.g. £35 in a month and wish to make further calls, you find your account is blocked until you pay the £35, so you must stay abreast of your account especially if you’ve been away for a while. I had to contact customer services and unblock my account, by paying the bill so my £35 credit was renewed. It’s a shame Quip don’t allow a higher monthly credit limit like some companies do. On the other hand; unlike some companies you are not required to pay up front (in advance) before you’ve made any calls. So, that’s my experience of using Quip as a telecommunications portal.
CALLS CHARGES ---------------
To give you some idea of call savings I will briefly mention some current call prices as charged by Quip compared to other Telecoms e.g. First Telecom and parent company BT.
International Calls: QUIP V’s BT v’s First Telecom:
USA 3.5p/min vs. 24p/min vs. 8p/min FRANCE 7p/min vs. 28p/min vs. 13p/min GERMANY 7p/min vs. 28p/min vs. 7p/min AUSTRIA 8p/min vs. 39p/min vs. 24p/min INDIA 39p/min vs. 120p/min** vs. 48.4p/min
** BT ‘s standard rate (98.4p/min wkd)
Quip’s call charges are listed first as you can see in each case Quip are cheaper.
By no means are Quip the cheapest Telecom in the market; really cheap ones are companies such as Superline, C2000 etc BUT call quality and connection is not so reliable.
Calls to Mobiles and UK National Calls to Landlines:
Quip’s charges to mobile network’s are reasonable and on a par with other Telecommunication companies. For example, a call to Vodaphone anytime of the day costs 19p/min. UK National calls cost only 3.5p/min during weekday daytime or evenings (compare that to BT’s which is just under 8p/min daytime!!) Please remember Quip also charge a 5p connection charge on each answered call. At weekend’s national calls come down in price further to just 2p/min. All prices include vat and are rounded up to the nearest second not nearest minute.
It’s evident the bulk of the savings are to be made exclusively on International calls here.
Suggestions for Improvement ----------------------------
1. I feel the customer services could be improved and extended to 24 hours like the other Telecom companies. At present Quip customer services is available till about 8pm weekdays and a limited period on Saturdays with no customer service on Sundays!
2. Allow the option of an increased credit limit (>£35) for customers after two months.
In summary, I can say that Quip offer a reliable telecommunication service offering substantial discounts on International calls, with good connection and call quality (yes, even on calls to India!). At present, I award this company a 3 star rating based primarily on reliability.

Advantages: Easy quick service to use, and very affordable for long distance. Disadvantages: None really
I keep reading about all this Quip! and LineOne free unmetered rubbish.
There is one main reason to use Quip! and that is their offerings in terms of long distance calls.
There a a few companies out there offering the option of cheap long distance calls, and I chose Quip! above the rest for a few reasons.
Firstly I could sign-up online which took all of ten minutes.
Your obvious details are required, you name address, telephone and bank account ... ...24 hours to activate the account.
Quip! billing is done entirely online. You can view your call list online in detail, every call, destination, duration and cost. There is also a search page so you can only show cals between certain periods, or to certain numbers or even above or below a specific amount. The search feature is clear and easy to use.
You bill is available online at the click of a button. When your next Quip! bill is ready you receive ...

Advantages: free surf time Disadvantages: Its not available for much longer
I signed up for Quip at the beginning of April and admit I have spent many hours surfing the net for free. I think the service to begin with was pretty awful as there were many times I could either not log onto the internet or even get an outside line on my telephone. I emailed the company with regards to my problems and got several emails back that had absolutely nothing to do with my enquiry! Sad to say now that Quip have finally got their act ... ...I get an email to advise that due to the huge demand from subscribers they will no longer be able offer free surf time. I feel disappointed that this has happened because there was so much publicity at the time they started this offer with other companies providing this service it seems hard to believe that a company is going to pull out because of over whelming demand from subscribers. Maybe there are other reasons for this that I don't know ...
Advantages: Reliable, cheap, no hidden costs Disadvantages: Only available over the internet
...in line with the standard quip rate when unmetered access to the internet is ended.
The main difference between Quip and other telcos is that Quip only does business over the internet. You have to be on the internet as all the bills are sent this way. However, there is a local rate number to ring when you are away from your computer.
Another good facility is the ability to use your account from any phone in the UK including payphones, without any ...
Lineone and Quip what a great idea. I signed up online and was on the system in less than two weeks and have used it ever since every day without engaged tones or slow conection speeds. So whats the catch? Lineone is ending the service on Sep 30th and going over to BT Surftime. This means that to continue having 24 hour access I have to change companys with all the problems of changing e-mail over etc. This means that Quip will lose a coustomer because ...
Advantages: Flexible Disadvantages: Busy tone started to appear. High calling cost with free internet option
I joined quip in order to use their 24/7 free internet service. Their web interface impressed me as this is the only service free 24/7 provider that does not lock users to a specified phone line (user can change them instantly online, and 10 numbers access number can be set a time). They also allow their telecom service to be accessed from public phones which is handy. However, busy tones started to appear on their internet service and unless they ...
Advantages: the service is good Disadvantages: international tariff could have better price
for calculation. You can check clicking in the pricing information. Brazil - 0,55 p/min so 30min =16,50. Than I went to check Onetel,Quip,WorldXchange,Callforless,Telco and they all have about the same 19p as average. The only one that doesn't ask you for nothing is Superline co.uk, you just sign up and pay as you use but you have to have credit card. The price to call abroad to Brazil is 14,5p, so half of the price of BT.
The conclusion is, who has the same problem that I have to make international call, can think in join 2 together BT+Superline as I already did, because does make the difference when the bill comes along. ...

Advantages: Err . . . Disadvantages: Costs a bomb for phone calls
British Telecom is actually, Big Trouble. Why, I here you ask. Well firstly, they make their call prices sound really good by promoting their service, BT Together. BT Together does indeed, have good call prices, but you have to pay £11.99 a month, including line rental. And, unless you use the phone alot, this definitely isn't worth it. EVERY SINGLE Phone company that I have come across, charges at least half the price of BT calls. The cheapest ones I know of are 'Quip!' and 'Atlantic Telecom'. They charge as litrrle as 1p a minute for calls.
The second reason BT are a rip off is to do with Line One. As you probably know, a few months ago, you could get totally free internet access from Line One if you spent at least £5 a month on phone calls with 'Quip!'. Good deal. But last month, Line One announced that later this month, they are ...

Advantages: Cheap calls, free 0800 calls! Disadvantages: Busy network, poorish coverage in some places!
I got my first experience of Virgin Mobile last x-mas. I was on Cellnet's pay and go tariff, but that was much too expensive to be useful! Virgin sounded good, and I bought one of their phone and got connected to their network!
The first few days were terrible! Making, and receiving calls became impossible, as did sending SMS's! That got sorted pretty soon, within a week or two. A few weeks later a letter of appology came through the door, which I thought was a nice touch.
At evenings the network is very busy and sometimes you have to try 2 or 3 times to get through. Free 0800 access is nice, and at the time or writing, they haven't barred Quip's access number, so at the moment I'm making calls on my mobile almost half the price I'd pay from a BT landline! Dunno how long it'll last though! And there are some really sexy phone ...
