For those who have ever got lot driving now might be the time to consider investing in a satellite navigation system You could do worse than this one The RAC200. It might not have things like mp3 or Bluetooth but if you want to get from A to B it does what it says on the packet Let's look at it in more detail what it has and can do. It is a fairly compact unit with a 3.5"touch screen weighing a mere 191g it comes with the mounting cradle and a 12vDC adaptor and has a built in lithium rechargeable battery. The preloaded maps of UK and Ireland are provided by Route66
Your proposed destination can be found by inserting either the full address or by a 7 digit post code search. It also has a fuzzy search method which you can add part of the address if you don't know it all and then the unit will come up with a list of possible options meeting the criteria you have entered. Like many sat navs it will give a distance and estimated time of your arrival and you can choose either the quickest or shortest route to your destination. The route can be displayed in 2 or 3D format in day or night time colours on the screen as well as clear voice instructions from the built in speaker. However unlike some systems it does not assume everyone drives a car you can set it for a lorry route perhaps this will end the disaster stories you hear or even for pedestrians. Should you make a mistake or have to take a diversion auto rerouting is there to help you Your favourite locations can be programmed into the unit as well as your home address so that wherever you are you can at the touch of a button get directions home no matter where you are There are also on the software thousands of points of interest installed both round your destination and your position at any point in time along the route This is particularly helpful if you spoor break your journey.
Also preload are fixed speed camera locations that you can be warned of in advance you can select how you are notified of them and at what distance you from then you are given the warning this is both visible and audible. Unlike many of systems for which there is a paid subscription for speed camera alert updates these are FREE and available for life of the unit and can be updated from Route 66 website. The same notification system can be used for other points of interest. For your points of interest there is a warn on route which when selected will only warn of those on the route or when deselected warn of those on or around the route again warnings visible and audible It is not by any means the most expensive piece of such kit available on the market the RRP is £89.99 can be obtained at that price direct from RAC but you can get cheaper elsewhere. It is however well worth it and I have come to rely on it and would well advise people to give it due consideration and not too be put off by the fact that it is not the most expensive.
Advantages: touch screen menu, easy to use, works on post codes, calculates distances Disadvantages: the computer generated voice is grinding
...in the direction of the RAC 200, a fairly cheap SatNav at £99.
Small in size at 10 x 8.5 x 2.5 cm the RAC 200 has a 3.5 inch touch screen user interface that can be attached really securely to the windscreen. The software is easy to set up and even has voice instructions should on the onscreen prompts be too complicated.
The RAC 200 is not only a SatNav that will guide you from A to B using postcodes rather than addresses, it also uploads when ... ...points I already know the way to and switch it on when I move into unknown territory. Using the RAC 200 I have never got lost and overall it is far superior to the TomTom so I would recommend it to drivers looking to buy a new SatNav. ...

Advantages: Value for money, ease of setting up, intuitive to use Disadvantages: Doesn't recognise some of the more rural obscure addresses
The RAC 200 is an excellent SatNav at the lower end of the market. I'd been put off getting one for ages until I had a weekend coming that I knew would be taking me all over the UK. After buying the RAC 200 I can only say, 'why on earth did I wait so long?!'. It took all the stress out of travelling alone (no one to map read) in unfamiliar territory. It really couldn't have been simpler to install. From taking it out of the box to having it up and ... ...time.
Okay, so the RAC 200 may have trouble recognising some of the more obscure rural addresses (I still had to print a local map of one drop off place near Wrexham) but, considering the value for money and the ease of use, I would say it's an excellent option for someone wanting something at the lower end of the market who requires little by way of starting up and installing.
I bought mine in Argos at £89.99 in November '08 and feel it was money ...

Advantages: Cheap, easy to operate Disadvantages: Takes ages to pick up GPS signals, very basic.
Bought this for £99.99 from Currys, its easy to operate but pretty basic overall, I took it back and exchanged it for a Tom Tom One at £114.99 because it took anything up to 30 minutes to obtain a GPS signal which I found extremely annoying and time wasting, when it did finally obtain a signal it only found two satellites, where the Tom Tom finds six or seven, also the memory card protrudes from the unit and can foul on the cradle if you're not careful, ...
