I write this opinion as a personal record of first hand experience of this so called caring motoring organisation.. I am not going to cite membership fees nor am I going to cite their claims of a wonderful service, you can make your own mind up about the RAC from my experience and from other good Ops here on Ciao..

A few years ago, whilst driving overnight from Carlisle to London, I encountered a most dreadful storm, I was on my own on the southbound carriageway just North of Kendal when I came across the most horrific storm, thunder, lightening, torretnial rain, and yes you guessed it ...my car cut out, I managed to get to the hard shoulder, and although angry about the breakdown I thought no problem I am in the RAC they'll sort it out, so I follwed the arrows on the marker posts and walked some 300 yards to the nearest emergency phone, I spoke to the operator and gave him my details...a few moments later he said the RAC are refusing to come out, rather embaressingly he said 'er your membership lapsed yesterday, it suddenly dawne on me that I hadn't sent them a cheque and I thought that I had signed a standing order, obviously I hadn't, I asked the operator to call them back tell them I am stranded in a storm and inform them what had happened and that I would be willing to sign a direct debit or standing order form with the roadside recovery man...they more or less told me to go forth and multiply, and point blank refused to come out to help me...

There was no way I was going to get anywhere, and I decided to go back to my car and think about what to do next, after about an hour the rain had eased and to my astonishment an AA van pulled up, asked if he could assist, I said that I wasn't a member, he asked me if I would be prepared to join and I said yes, he then towed me to the next service area, sorted the problem which was the points, I joined the AA with full recovery and he got a well earned Breakfast and cuppa out of me...

The Moral to this storyis... Never put off til tomorrow what you can do today, it was of course my fault that I hadn't rejoined the RAC despite the intention to do so, but for a lapse of less than 24 hours I think they were mean, and if this is the way they treat their members, then I am glad I am now a member of Britannia Rescue, what happened to the AA..well they got too expensive..but their service was excellent! !
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Sorry about the H rating, I understood that you weren't going to mention costs etc. but a little more detail about the services on offer, or those which you had would have been helpful. However, a very good account of your bad experience, it does seem mean of them, especially as you had offered to rejoin there and then! I am looking for breakdown cover now. I think I will go with the RAC though, due to an offer they are running at the moment, and I did deal with the RAC Auto Windscreens section of the company recently, with great results. Pete

Have you seen Autonational Rescue? I have been with them for 4 years and they are much cheaper than all the rest and provide an excellent service

nice personal story. i am shopping around for breakdown cover and RAC is on my list but i could have down with more details on the service.
well done
Alex
Advantages: It's better to be covered than not (hence my putting 'yes' in the recommend box Disadvantages: But that doesn't mean you can expect SERVICE
