I'm into gadgets but was very reluctant to take the free Blackberry being offered to me by my employer. Of all my friends I resisted getting a mobile phone until six years ago (welcome to the noughties Nobby they all said), and I had a very similar feeling about this. I didn't want to be chained to the office any more than I already was!

Colleagues however reported good things, so after a chat with one of our IT bods I opted for the 8700v.

And I'm free!

The features and functions are better than good. It can't compete with a camera phone, or a music phone, or a game phone, but it isn't trying to. What it aims to be (a business phone) it does with aplomb.

I'm a slave to my microsoft contacts list, and rely heavily on my task list and calendar. The 8700v syncs with my PC so I've always got them to hand, and my secretary can still add new meetings etc which update to the blackberry. The best bit about this (for me) is that I can spend a few minutes on the train in the morning sorting out what I'll be doing that day, which means I can enjoy my coffee and avoid the stress when the commute's done.

I also work away from the office quite frequently, and the internet functionality, easy-peasy e-mail and built in phone mean I often don't need to switch on a laptop to be able to do a full day's work. Although you can't create microsoft office documents, the mini qwerty keyboard makes it a doddle to send even the longest e-mails.

Call quality is very good and clear, the speakerphone feature is decent (although it sounds a bit like it is in a bucket), and reception on the phone and the GPRS connection seem to hold up in areas where my SE K800i has long since lost touch with the mothership (even though both are vodafone) which is a big plus for me. I HATE getting cut off midway through somet

Battery life is great, in fact it is a pretty hardy puppy alround: I've carried in a pocket with keys and coins(the big clear screen stayed scratch-free), dropped it down the stairs, spilt coffee on it (that WAS a stressful morning!) and left it in the garden overnight to the mercy of the morning dew. Not only has it kept going, but it still looks pretty flash! Not when it is in the shiny leather-and-nylon carry case/belt holster though... that's tacky tacky tat and like wrapping Elle Macpherson in bin liners.

And it really is a good looker, without resorting to too much extra plastic. The gunmetal grey/black/silver combo is smart and the keys (including the extra programable buttons and the ones for answering calls) are well placed and a decent size. It's a fair bit chubbier than its non-qwerty cousins, and it reasonably heavy for its size, but I think that just beause they've squeezed in lots of good stuff ;0)

If you want a camera/phone/PC/walkmanipod/calendar/email/coffeemaker/shaver, this isn't it. If you want a way to stay in touch with the office which will actually allow you to snatch a bit of your life back, this could be just the job.

Despite my initial reluctancy, I now wouldn't be without mine.
