Race Driver Grid is a recent racing game brought to us by Codemasters, the brains behind the successful Toca Touring Car series.
Talk about jumping in at the deep end! With the likes of Gran Turismo and Need for Speed ruling the racing game scenes at the moment, Race Driver Grid certainly has a lot to live up to.
Like many recent successful racing games, a career mode is present, under the name 'Grid World'. Here you can start your very own driving experience, tear up the roads and become the ultimate driver. But even the best of us have to start somewhere. You begin by racing for other teams, trying to earn £40,000 to buy your own car. With each race, you get a certain amount of reputation points depending on the difficulty level you choose, the higher the difficulty level, the higher the amount of reputation points you earn.
When you have enough money to buy your own car, your can start racing under your own team name. Here, you will earn a lot more reputation points. To begin with, you will only be able to take part in 18 races depending you have enough money to buy the appropriate car. These 18 races are divided into three divisions; America, Europe and Japan. With 6 races in each division. When you have earned enough reputation points in the specific division, you will be given the next license where you can compete in a further 6 races. There are three licenses in each division.The range of events you can compete in is surprisingly broad;
Grip Races - First to cross the line wins
Drift events - The highest score accumulated by drifting the car wins.
Pro Touge Races - A two leg race. Up and down a hill. Winner is the fastest over two runs.
Endurance Races - A longer race. At the end of each season, you will be given the opportunity to compete in the prestigious "24 hour Le Mans". You will only be racing the cars in the same class as you, so coming second isn't all that bad. Oh and don't worry, you don't actually have to race for 24 hours, now that would be a bit harsh. 24 minutes is the longest you have to race for.
Demolition Derby - My favourite. Last one standing wins, depending you cross the finish line.
Furthermore, earning money for simply winning races certainly isn't enough. As you win races, sponsors will approach you with different offers were you have the opportunity to earn serious cash! Kerching! The developers of this game certainly have thought of everything. Plus, for those of you who love finding bargains on eBay, yes, you guessed it! Race Driver even has it's own eBay! A good feature, but in all honesty doesn't really serve of any purpose. When you have acquired enough reputation points, you can hire a team mate. He drives in all the same races as you do, but if he wins, you get all the money. Bargain! Also, your cars will get damaged during races and you could even total you car if your driving isn't up to scratch, never mind though, because with a new 'flashback' feature it doesn't matter. This allows you to rewind the game from where you crashed and attempt the same play over again. The amount of times you can use this feature depends upon the difficulty. Multiplayer races are online only, therefore it's a 1 player game. A bit of a disappointment really, as my 10 year old brother thinks he's better than me? Yeah right!
The graphics are immense, the gameplay is fantastically realistic, and each car has individual attributes that you can actually commute with. Also, with a range of driving assists ranging from traction control to brake assist, it makes it playable for all ages. It is a superb game, heavyweights Gran Turismo and Need for Speed might be beaten to the line for racing game of the year if they're not careful!
Advantages: Real-damage, Graphis, Longevity Disadvantages: Only 1-player offline
...such as real-damage and different race types such as driving, pro touge, formula one and nascar. There are many race tracks ranging from city landscapes to scenic mountains with different types of cars. They really have focused on variety in this game; the real damage tops things off portraying its realism. I liked the concept that you can hire another racer to race for your country and earn points for your team as well as yourself. choosing the ... ...he is, plus a few more factors that can determine his performance on the track. The graphics are amazing in this game but I'm sure the cars are not as modelled to the exact state of the original cars that Gran Turismo 5 are. What really bothered me is that it's only a one player game unless you go online so really multiplayer is not as simple as get your friend to grab a controller and play against you; you would have to go online. This game has ...

...could lead to a huge race ending crash.
Now those familiar to Gran Turismo may complain about the lack of cars available to purchase, GRID only boasts 43 cars in total but each of these cars are proper pedal-to-medal racing cars and therefore are the cars that you really want to drive. For example I would much rather race my Pagani Zonda around the Nurburgring rather than trawl round the oval shaped courses in Gran Turismo in my Nissan Micra. Now ... ...which required the user to race against other road cars, which I find tedious. GRID's main career mode is known as GRID WORLD which requires the gamer to set up his or her own racing team. After selecting an appropriate team name and decided on the custom colours your shiny cars will sport on race day, it is up to you to build up your reputation on the track and to earn money. Money is earned buy winning races and successes on the track will enable ...

Advantages: Graphics, sound, gameplay Disadvantages: No split screen multi-player
Race Driver: Grid captures the atmosphere of every race, from the starting grid to the finishing flag. It's spectacular graphics set it apart from the rest with realistic and licensed cars that make the game as thrilling as it is. When you first start the career mode you set in an American muscle car race in the streets of Detroit. Your aim obviously to win the race but, this is the first time that you see the extent of the graphics and realistic ... ...race for other teams so you can gain enough money to refurbish your Ford Mustang Boss to mint condition. Once you have done this you are able to create your own team, this allowing you to enter any race that you wish, which you have a car for, as you work your way through you gain enough moeny to buy different cars. After a few races in every season that you get the chance to enter the prestigious 24hr Le Mans Race, at the start you have the money ...

Advantages: Graphics and Gameplay Disadvantages: Soundtrack
On your marks, get set, go the shop and buy GRID as soon you can. Storyline First off the storyline is very interesting, because it engages you into the story, by using a Audio Naming system (As long you are on the list you can use your name, or use a nickname). You can also Hire a team mate and buy different cars, not to mention the option to buy cars off Ebay. Gameplay The gameplay is amazing and will blow you away. The graphics ... ...playing Destruction Derby to look at the car afterwards, the tracks are really hardcore and you will find yourself having the time of your life spinning out every 5 seconds. AI The artificial intelligence is excellent, with opponents crashing into you to get to the top, and other cars spinning out and crashing into each other, you will be swerving around other cars that are wrecked.
Music Not all that good. I turned it off after ...
