centred, disciplined, humble yet powerful, Ryan (and his onscreen incarnations in Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford) has made Tom Clancy one of the most popular writers in the world. But while Clancy has constructed the Ryan mythology, he has also quietly established his shadow double, John Clark. Appearing in The Cardinal of the Kremlin, Clear and Present Danger and Without Remorse, Clark has many of Jack Ryan's most appealing traits, but he is also a darker figure embodying the more paranoid sensibilities of the late nineties. As is made clear from the opening pages of Rainbow Six, ex-Navy SEAL Clark and his colleagues believe violent, deadly force to be the best deterrent for terrorism. Clark (a.k.a. Rainbow Six) has left the CIA to create an England-based organisation code-named "Rainbow". Its mission: deploy an elite squad of American operatives combined with handpicked British, French and German agents to stop terrorism in its tracks. Rainbow's emergence could not be more timely: in quick succession, the force diffuses three attempted terrorist actions. But Clark becomes suspicious when Russian agents suddenly show interest in Rainbow's work. Rainbow Six appeals on all the levels that Clancy fans could hope for. The Rainbow operatives, from Navy SEALs to German mountain-leader school graduates, are rendered to inspire with their physical and mental prowess. The book is infatuated with the latest gadgets for scrambling, transmitting and decoding secrets. And, in a carefully woven narrative that simultaneously traces the Rainbow team, a former KGB agent named Popov, the Australian Olympic security team and a sinister group of American scientists, Clancy artfully reveals the mystery of "Shiva" at the centre of the novel. How does Clark measure up against Jack Ryan? He may be the perfect hero for a world with hidden villains. --Patrick O'Kelley

Nintendo 64: the most innovative and intriguing title of its kind for the platform. Borrowed from Tom Clancy's novel of the same name,Rainbow Sixoffers a fascinating first-person adventure through lush worlds and highly detailed environments that have never been seen on gaming consoles. But don't stop to smell the roses too often or you'll end up staring down the business end of an oncoming Stinger missile. You command an elite anti-terrorism force through a series of stealth and action missions. Sometimes you will need to sneak through a foreign embassy in the dark with your night vision goggles on, while other times you'll need to launch a full-on weapons attack on your enemies. The game does both types of missions well, but you'll have to spend some time planning with your team before you start each level. Plotting out missions in advance and positioning team members lends a unique real-time strategy feel to the already excellent shooter aspect of the game.As the team leader, you are solely responsible for making sure each mission goes well. Direct and protect your squad, save any hostages who might be hanging around, and accomplish your main mission objectives. Good luck.--Bill Hutchens

In typical Clancy style (America rules, we're gonna kick your ass), he has positioned the CIA as an all seeing, mega talented, streamlined and moraly sound monolith. Therefore, from page one, reality goes out of the window to some extent.
The book revolves around several story strands which converge to the main story and this is done in a clever, revealing way with excellent pace. It's actually a very user friendly read, complex yet simple to follow and he is never condescending in his descriptions of complicated hardware etc.
The story essentially is about a bunch of socially elite tree huggers who create and manufacture a deadly virus called Shiva to kill of the vast proportion of planet Earth who are not on their wavelength. Very similar to George Bush (i.e. they have hammers and are looking for nails to smash).
Enter stage left John Clark, superhero.
John Clark is an all knowing bloke who puts together a 'black project' of an elite team of anti terrorist soldiers skilled in global rapid response to terrorist situations (callsign Rainbow Six). Like UPS with guns.
His group is comprised of SAS, Israelis, French, Germans etc and works in collaboration with world governments to kick ass and chew bubblegum wherever appropriate.
Clancys descriptions of Rainbow Six's takedowns of various and often very believable terrorist situations is absolutely gripping and really makes you picture the action in your head. Everything from Amusement Parks full of kids in Spain being taken over by nutters to Banks in Switzerland being stormed are covered with frightening scenario accuracy, Clancy does know his stuff especially when it comes to describing military equipment, protocal etc.
There are various other plot elements like a dodgy Russian agent, human guinea pigs, international security consultants, the Olympics, the IRA etc and it is very very well put together.
It's a very long book but the story merits that and I've read it twice now, really enjoying it both times. The main fortes of the book are the gizmos, the weaponry, the stealth, strategy and sheer brutality of some of the operations.
The main characters have excellent arcs, you really get underneath them and although abhorant, even the motivations of the bad guys are well described (but to be honest, unbelievable). At times it resorts to a gung ho 'we are America style' but in the main, it is quite balanced albeit moralistic.
The book was quite unbelievable in parts but perhaps less so now since the advent of the Twin Towers outrage and the proliferation of chemical weapons etc to terrorists. My main reason for notbuying into the whole suspension of disbelief thing is that no-one (no matter how radical) would actually plan and execute a plan to kill 99.9% of the world in a very painful, horrible way. Certainly not the wide group of intelligensia described in this book. Every crime has a motive and the motive here just isn't compelling enough. If you accept this and just enjoy the book for the story then it's not a problem.
The book starts well and moves along at the right speed throughout with no real 'dull bits' but I did find that the ending was a bit absurd and anticlimactic so I was left a little disappointed.
I would very much like to see him doing a franchise of this character with Rainbow 6 as he did with Jack Ryans character (Clarke has appeared previously in Clancys books but not as a main charcter).
Overall, it's an intelligently written book with suspenseful moments that makes you wish the Americans really were that good at dealing with global threats.
Available in hardback and paperback from virtually all stores, I would recommend it as a good read for those who like warfare based Thrillers and obviously to anyone who has enjoyed a Clancy book before.

...from the side of the Rainbow warriors and from the opposition. The research that goes into such a book has been well carried out. There are no glaringly obvious gaps or unbelievable weapons or tactics used. The science side appears sound also. Everything appears to be totally logical and done for a reason.
Here Tom Clancy has been very clever. Instead of the usual type of terrorist, the villains are what would normally be considered as the heights ... ...The action switching from the Rainbow personnel to the others. The action travels at a fast pace, especially the action sequences. Anti terrorist strikes are well handled and you Appreciate the problems of forces who have to undertake such operations. You can also see the appeal for computer games.
The opposition has, in some reviews, been labelled as "crazies". This is the norm for those who oppose, But are they? This is not your "normal" world ...

I bought Rainbow Six because I had played the computer game of the same name (which is brilliant by the way) and i liked the sound of the plot. It is a long book (800+ pages) but believe me it is worth it. Review of Rainbow Six - Tom Clancy
Advantages: Good basis of a storyline Disadvantages: Very Long (897 pages)
Rainbow Six based around a multi-national Special Forces team based in England, and is run by, surprise surprise, an American. Anti-American tendancies aside, the book mainly follows John Clark, the Head of Rainbow Six but branches of to follow each incident, before returning again to the main storyline.

Advantages: Clancy's excellent technical writing Disadvantages: Too far fetched.
...finally getting around to reading Rainbow Six. However, I must say it was a bit of a disappointment.
The plot for me was just too far fetched. The two main characters, Domingo (Ding) Chavez and John Clarke are beginning to show there age, and it all seemed a little bit like Clancy was desperately trying to wring out another book 'starring' these two. The bite and excitement of Clear and Present Danger, where these two were really introduced, was ... ...throughout. Chavez's impending fatherhood is also a bit of a bizarre side-track, and adds nothing to the story.
And I also found the constant references to England and English life a bit patronising. The comment about how hard it is to master the art of driving with roundabouts seemed to make Americans appear a touch stupid, and the references to the surprisingly good beer were annoying.
That said, the technical stuff is as usual excellent. The ...

Advantages: It's Clancy and Ryan - who can fail to like it? Disadvantages: It's very, very long
TomClancy is back with another behemoth of a book. After the success of ‘RainbowSix’, he has chosen to mix its characters with those of the Jack Ryan novels. President Ryan is dealing with trouble on the home front, but there are also big problems in Russia, whilst the Chinese also have their own designs for the world. Can Ryan restore stability?
‘The Bear And The Dragon’ takes a long time to read, but if you stick with it, you will find a thrilling novel that captures the reader’s attention. Clancy’s writing seems as authentic as it could ever be, from the combat scenes down to the behaviour of the Secret Service. Jack Ryan is a powerful character, whom Clancy has developed continuously over the years and still manages to do so in this novel.
He paints a disturbing picture of what could ...
