Nintendo 64: the most innovative and intriguing title of its kind for the platform. Borrowed from Tom Clancy's novel of the same name, Rainbow Six offers a fascinating first-person adventure through lush worlds and highly detailed environments that have never been seen on gaming consoles. But don't stop to smell the roses too often or you'll end up staring down the business end of an oncoming Stinger missile. You command an elite anti-terrorism force through a series of stealth and action missions. Sometimes you will need to sneak through a foreign embassy in the dark with your night vision goggles on, while other times you'll need to launch a full-on weapons attack on your enemies. The game does both types of missions well, but you'll have to spend some time planning with your team before you start each level. Plotting out missions in advance and positioning team members lends a unique real-time strategy feel to the already excellent shooter aspect of the game. As the team leader, you are solely responsible for making sure each mission goes well. Direct and protect your squad, save any hostages who might be hanging around, and accomplish your main mission objectives. Good luck. --Bill Hutchens
centred, disciplined, humble yet powerful, Ryan (and his onscreen incarnations in Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford) has made Tom Clancy one of the most popular writers in the world. But while Clancy has constructed the Ryan mythology, he has also quietly established his shadow double, John Clark. Appearing inThe Cardinal of the Kremlin,Clear and Present DangerandWithout Remorse, Clark has many of Jack Ryan's most appealing traits, but he is also a darker figure embodying the more paranoid sensibilities of the late nineties. As is made clear from the opening pages ofRainbow Six, ex-Navy SEAL Clark and his colleagues believe violent, deadly force to be the best deterrent for terrorism.Clark (a.k.a. Rainbow Six) has left the CIA to create an England-based organisation code-named "Rainbow". Its mission: deploy an elite squad of American operatives combined with handpicked British, French and German agents to stop terrorism in its tracks. Rainbow's emergence could not be more timely: in quick succession, the force diffuses three attempted terrorist actions. But Clark becomes suspicious when Russian agents suddenly show interest in Rainbow's work.Rainbow Sixappeals on all the levels that Clancy fans could hope for. The Rainbow operatives, from Navy SEALs to German mountain-leader school graduates, are rendered to inspire with their physical and mental prowess. The book is infatuated with the latest gadgets for scrambling, transmitting and decoding secrets. And, in a carefully woven narrative that simultaneously traces the Rainbow team, a former KGB agent named Popov, the Australian Olympic security team and a sinister group of American scientists, Clancy artfully reveals the mystery of "Shiva" at the centre of the novel. How does Clark measure up against Jack Ryan? He may be the perfect hero for a world with hidden villains. --Patrick O'Kelley

...response to terrorist situations (callsign Rainbow Six). Like UPS with guns. His group is comprised of SAS, Israelis, French, Germans etc and works in collaboration with world governments to kick ass and chew bubblegum wherever appropriate.
Clancys descriptions of Rainbow Six's takedowns of various and often very believable terrorist situations is absolutely gripping and really makes you picture the action in your head. Everything from Amusement ... ...franchise of this character with Rainbow 6 as he did with Jack Ryans character (Clarke has appeared previously in Clancys books but not as a main charcter).
Overall, it's an intelligently written book with suspenseful moments that makes you wish the Americans really were that good at dealing with global threats.
Available in hardback and paperback from virtually all stores, I would recommend it as a good read for those who like warfare based Thrillers ...

...from the side of the Rainbow warriors and from the opposition. The research that goes into such a book has been well carried out. There are no glaringly obvious gaps or unbelievable weapons or tactics used. The science side appears sound also. Everything appears to be totally logical and done for a reason.
Here Tom Clancy has been very clever. Instead of the usual type of terrorist, the villains are what would normally be considered as the heights ... ...The action switching from the Rainbow personnel to the others. The action travels at a fast pace, especially the action sequences. Anti terrorist strikes are well handled and you Appreciate the problems of forces who have to undertake such operations. You can also see the appeal for computer games.
The opposition has, in some reviews, been labelled as "crazies". This is the norm for those who oppose, But are they? This is not your "normal" world ...

...of the exploits of the Rainbow Six team, and on the other he follows a Russian, who is ex-KGB but is being asked to perform some strange chores. These chores directly affect the Rainbow Six team. There is an overall reason for these events happening when they do, but I would rather you read it yourself than I give the game away.

You begin to realise that the things that happen in this story, could also happen in real life if the right people wished it so.
I found this book to be a very compelling read that I rarely put down. I found that the author never went off on tangents and so the story flowed very nicely.

Advantages: Great Plot,Good characters Disadvantages: A little long for some people
I bought Rainbow Six because I had played the computer game of the same name (which is brilliant by the way) and i liked the sound of the plot. It is a long book (800+ pages) but believe me it is worth it. The book keeps you hooked because there are about three different storylines going on throughout the book which only come together at the end. The basic proviso behind the game is that a new multinational taskforce recruited from the cream of the ... ...travels all around the world and does the job if the local police can't handle a hostage situation or similiar terrorist goings on.
This force is called Rainbow and its leasder is John Clark, codenamed Six, hence the name. Anyway this book is brilliant, BUY IT NOW!!!!!!! ...

Advantages: Good basis of a storyline Disadvantages: Very Long (897 pages)
Rainbow Six based around a multi-national Special Forces team based in England, and is run by, surprise surprise, an American. Anti-American tendancies aside, the book mainly follows John Clark, the Head of Rainbow Six but branches of to follow each incident, before returning again to the main storyline.
After watching the films ‘Clear& Present Danger’ and ‘Patriot Games’, I’d been waiting for this book by the same writer, Tom Clancy. Having said ...

John Clark is the man who conducts the secret missions President Ryan can have no part of. This time, the mission involves a group of terrorists the world has never encountered before, a band of men and women so extreme that their success could literally mean the end of life as we know it.
