This is one of the most interesting and enlightening books on child raising that I have read. Purchased three years ago when my son turned four, the advice contained within improved my parenting skills no end and allowed me to become more patient and sensitive to my sons needs.
At around this time, my cute, affable little toddler seemed to be morphing into an aggressive, argumentative difficult little boy. Bedtimes, bathtimes and mealtimes became battlegrounds and if I hadn't had the physical strength to remove him from a certain situations I don't know what I would have done.
Raising boys explained the importance of hormone surges on boys behaviour and the frustration they feel at not being able to communicate there needs in quite the same articulate way as girls of the same age.
It is a mistake to believe that boys need toughening up. They need just as much, if not more love and affection than girls, though not in front of their friends at school! It is a little sad to discover that baby girls are held, cuddled and spoken to far more than boys.
By following the advice contained in the book and providing my son with a more structured day, an outlet for his physical energies and more praise, encouragement and physical affection, I began to regain control and enjoy his company again.
Raising boys is structured into the three stages of boyhood. The preschool upto six stage; where a boy is very much under the influence of his mother, upto 12 years; when the father has the most influence and the teenage years; when the importance of male role models outside the immeadiate family is explained.
There is a helpful section for single parents, detail on coping with bullying and sexual development and information on schooling, homework and developmental problems.
I really believe that for parents, teachers and anyone else concerned with looking after boys, this book is an essential read which could completely change their outlook on boys.

Advantages: A very useful book for anyone raising a boy. Disadvantages: None
Biddulph made it one of my first choices amongst the other books I saw.
SteveBiddulph is renowned for the books he wrote on bringing up children: "The Secret of Happy Children" and "More Secrets of Happy Children", which I do recommend.
I like the way he writes, as he is funny and not patronising in any way, as some American authors tend to be. I find most of his advice "naturally wise" and he always thinks of both the parent and the child.

"RaisingBoys" is a great help to any parent (mother or father) bringing up a boy and clearly states that boys are different, but in a very good sense, and that being aware of this difference from an early age, will help a parent not to put a stigma on their sons because of behaviours which are partly driven by a physical ...
Advantages: Insightful into the workings of boys Disadvantages: None!
As a woman with two sisters and no brothers it was a strange new world I entered when my first son was born. Initially there didn't seem to be any difference between boy babies and girl babies then he started moving!!! After my second son was born I began to realise that I needed some guidance on how to raise them to become men.
I bought the SteveBiddulph book based solely on the title and was so glad that I did. It is written in a very easy to read way with lots of anecdotes and case studies to demonstrate his points. I really felt like I was suddenly starting to understand why my sons behaved the way they did. The book covered not only the baby stages (as many parenting books seem to) but right through the growing up ages. I feel I am now equipped with the knowledge I need to understand my boys better and create an environment ...
Advantages: Interesting and informative Disadvantages: None!
atiitude to sex. The final subjects covered are about sport and schooling. As sport can be a big part of a boys life the advice on how to keep your son safe is very useful. The section on schooling is one of the most important in the book, in my opinion. As we all know from various reports and headlines, many boys are failing at school. SteveBiddulph suggests a series of changes that schools need to make in order to allow our sons to succeed.
The author writes very well, and backs up his opinions with scientific facts. 'Raisingboys' deals with many of the problems faced by boys growing up in our society, and suggests things that we all need to do to help. Some of the advice is for parents, but much of it is directed a changing whole communities. I found this book to be very helpfull and informative and would highly recommend it to parents ...
