As my home buildings and contents insurance was up for renewal very shortly I started to look around for a decent quote. My current insurers (Barclays Bank) had sent me a quote of £395.00 which was more than the previous year and over £60.00 more than when I took the policy out three years ago. As I had had no claims whatsoever on the policy I wanted to know why the premium had risen so much. I was given a load of "blurb" from customer services so in the end I cancelled my policy on the spot.
This left me about 3 days to get new insurance cover so I scoured the yellow pages and the phone book looking for companies that had web sites as I had decided to try and go through the net to fond a new policy. This should be quicker, easier and less expensive than ringing all the insurance companies up.
I tried all the usual "big" companies like Churchill, Halifax, Direct Line etc. and most were quite a bit cheaper than Barclays, with the exception of Direct Line who were more expensive but I have found them to be expensive in every type of insurance I have had a quote for so that was no surprise.
Then I came across an ad for 1st Quote card and home insurance (http://www.1stquote.co.uk) and thought I'd give it a try. The web site loaded very quickly and even speaks to you (which is novel). The site is extremely easy to use and the quotation process does not ask loads of stupid useless questions. In fact, I didn't think it had asked enough questions but when I got to the policy premium page I sat up and took notice. It was just under £200.00 LESS than Barclays and about £100.00 LESS than the next nearest!! Ok I thought, the price is good but what about the cover? Well, the site only gives a very basic list of what is covered but it was enough to persuade me to take out the policy on the spot. I thought that if the policy details are rubbish when I get them through, I still have my right to cancel.
The policy documents came 2 days later (it was late afternoon when I took the policy out on the internet) and frankly I was amazed!! The cover was not only comparable with the Barclays policy but was actually better in some places. Fot a start the excess on the new policy was only £50.00 on everything (including subsidence) where it had been £100.00 with Barclays and £1000.00 for subsidence. The new policy included an automatic 10% increase in cover for Christmas and weddings - FREE. Everything to do with the home, inside and out, is covered. I feel better protected now than I did with Barclays, and for £200.00 less!!!
The day after I was 'phoned by a member of customer services to make sure that the policy was ok and to arrange for my monthly payments to be taken from my bank account. The person was very friendly and hgelpful and gave me his name so I had someone to contact in the future if I had any problems. I was very impressed!
I would highly recommend this insurer to everyone. If you are looking for good cheap house insurance in the UK, try http://www.1stquote.co.uk
