Rats
Pet rats are becoming more and more common there has been a big increase since the film Ratatouille, Pets at Homes rat sales went up 30% after the recent film. They have been kept as pets since around the end of the 19th century. They are very sociable animals and are ideal being kept in pairs so they have their own species company, this will stop them becoming bored and lonely. They are also very intelligent and can be trained to use a certain corner of their cage and will happily run around the house and come back when called, it's usually best to do this with food so they see it as positive when they do come back so they will do it again and again. They are very clean animals and do not have a bad smell unless their cage is allowed to get dirty, so it should be cleaned out regularly. Rats are a very active rodent and will need a large cage preferably one with metal bars so they can climb up it but they cannot chew their way out. They will need feeding every day and a supply of fresh drinking water. On the bottom of their cage the ideal thing is paper shreds as sawdust can irritate them and make the sneeze and snuffle.
They are very friendly and can be handled easily, making them ideal for children as long as the children are taught how to look after them properly and handle them correctly. They are probably better for children than other rodents as they are not as fragile.
Rats can get quite big being around 40cm from head to tail when fully grown. They can live from 2-5 years average being around 3 years old.
They come in many varieties mainly having different coat patterns and textures, some have different ear sizes such as dumbo rats which have rather large ears. There fur can vary from no fur to wrinky curley fur.
They cannot eat the same food as other rodents such as hamster good as they need a meat based diet, they also enjoy such things as egg, bread & milk, cheese and even dog biscuits. They should also have plenty of things to chew on in their cage to keep their teeth in good condition and this will also help prevent them from getting bored.
I would definitely recommend rats as pets but make sure you have the time to take care of them.
