Ravensburger Noddy Giant Picture Card Game

First impressions

With my eldest nephew now over 2 years of age we are always looking out for new games and ideas to keep him busy. He always likes to be moving about, but with the limited time we do have for games with him we like to make it interesting. He absolutely loves Noddy at the moment, though he changes his preferences on what seems like a weekly basis!

The product we have here is produced by Ravensburger, and this is a brand we trust. We have so many different puzzles and games from this brand, and we keep buying from it because the quality is always high and we have not had any huge disappointments yet in terms of the fun that can be had with the toys.

My experience

The Ravensburger Picture Card Game varies in its packaging depending on the design you go for. This Noddy set comes in packaging, which reminds me of the Top Trumps sets with its brightly coloured plastic base and clear plastic cover, displaying the cards beautifully. There are a total of 32 cards in this set, and along with Noddy we have Mr Plod and Big Ears, alongside those mischievous goblins Sly and Gobbo. Any Noddy fan will be able to instantly call these characters, and my nephew knows all their names with a little prompting.

This set allows you to play 4 different picture card games, and although people will have different names for these games we have what I call Snap, Happy Families, pairs and Old Maid. Each of these games have many variations of what they are called in different regions, so feel free to see what these really mean.

Snap is a simple game, and it just involves splitting the cards into 2 piles of 16. The idea is to take turns in placing a card on a pile, and when 2 cards the same are placed on top of each other you must shout ‘Snap!’ and then you win these cards to go on your own pile. With just 32 cards in the pack this game has limited appeal in this form.

The next game is called Happy Families and the object of the game is to collect as many ‘families’ as possible. The cards are dished out and then each player must take it in turns to ask each other for a particular card. If they do not have that card then you don’t get one, but if they do then they must give you it. The twist to this is that if someone else has the other card they will ask you for it, as they know you have the other one! ‘Families’ are then saved into piles and the player to have the most at the end wins the game.

Pairs is the next game, and this is just a case of shuffling the cards and having them all faced down. Players then take it in turns to turn over 2 cards. If they are a pair then they keep them. The player with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner. This is a good game to play with a youngster, as you can start off with 10 or 12 cards and then build up to more as your child’s memory skills improve.

The final game is called Old Maid. To play this game you must remove 1 of the 32 cards in order to begin. Cards are dished out amongst the players and the first thing you do is discard any cards that are matching pairs. Working clockwise, the first player offers the second player their cards (faced down). Once this card is added to their hand, if it makes a pair they then discard this pair. The player that just took the card now offers their hand to the next player, and so on. Once you have got rid of all your cards you are out of the game, but you don’t get left with the Old Maid. The losing player is left with the Old Maid in their hand (a single card).

The picture cards are of a good size (around 12cm in height) and are very colourful and glossy. They could do to be a little bit thicker in my opinion, as they are not as strong as they could be. A couple of our cards are starting to look tatty, and with small children playing with them this is something that Ravensburger have probably turned a blind eye to for cost reasons.

Price and availability

The Ravensburger Noddy Picture Card Game can be picked up for around the £8 mark online. This is a game that was released some time ago, and along with the various versions (such as Thomas and Friends etc) these appear to now be discontinued and so harder to find.

Final thoughts

This is a fun card game set to be played with by children from the age of 3 years. It is basic, but with a range of games to be played it will give plenty of fun for all ages, and would be a good gift for a youngster at Christmas with a range of ages around to enjoy the games with. The high quality of the cards, images and packaging make this an appealing product for young minds, though you wouldn’t want to be collecting all of the sets as they offer the same games and nothing different. A basic card set executed superbly.
