Advantages: Good selection of titles:skilfully condensed. Disadvantages: Cancelling...as you probably know.
You have probably heard the quip: “The person who said that nothing is impossible has obviously never tried to cancel a Readers’ Digest subscription!”And it is true that once you have made a purchase from Readers’ Digest, they cling tighter than a leech on a septic wound. But hold on…I’m about to say something nice about them!
I have for some time now been subscribing to the Readers’ Digest ... ...that I have enjoyed every volume so far. The titles chosen for this series are varied enough for there to be something to please every reader, and you may surprise yourself. I have never been much of a Crime fan, for instance, but I loved “The Visitor” by Lee Child, about a serial killer who leaves no forensic evidence at the crime scenes.

I have for some time now been subscribing to the Readers’ Digest Condensed Books and I have to say, hand on heart, that I have enjoyed every volume so far. The titles chosen for this series are varied enough for there to be something to please every reader, and you may surprise yourself. I have never been much of a Crime fan, for instance, but I loved “The Visitor” by Lee Child, about a serial killer who leaves no forensic evidence at the crime scenes.
Another title I thoroughly enjoyed was “The Bombmaker” by Stephen Leather, about a reformed IRA bombmaker, whose past comes back to haunt her when her former masters kidnap and threaten to kill her young daughter – unless she makes them another bomb!
“Relative Strangers” is about a devoted husband and wife whose marriage is threatened when a blood test seems to reveal that their teenage daughter, Gaby, could not possibly have been fathered by the husband – though his wife is adamant that she has never been unfaithful.
“Beneath The Skin”, by Nicci French, is a gripping psychological thriller about three young women who have nothing in common – except that the same man wants to kill them. I found this one totally unputdownable!
“Edith’s Book”, by Edith Velmans, is the remarkable story of a carefree thirteen-year-old girl growing up in The Hague during the War.As the Nazis campaign against the Jews intensifies, Edith and her family are forced to go into hiding. A superb and poignant novel.
These are just a few examples of the titles in the series and I hope that they will show the varied genres on offer in the Condensed Books titles. The books are skilfully condensed and lose nothing in the process. (I have gone on to read the full-length versions of some, and remain impressed by the condensed versions.)
Each volume of Condensed Books contains four titles and is in hardback format. Each edition is priced at £15.97,which includes postage. I think that is excellent value. Readers’ Digest also tempts you with little presents, which are nice but the books themselves are enough, really. (Although I did enjoy the little pack of Thorntons Continental choccies I recently received.)
If you subscribe you will receive a volume of Condensed Books every two months or so, although you are under no obligation to continue with them…but my guess is that you will want to.

...to call it a magazine. Readers can take out a subscription to Reader’s Digest which is obviously cheaper than buying a copy each month but it leaves the subscriber open to the many and varied offers.
The format of the magazine has been the same for as long as I can remember with stories and articles many of which have been contributed by the readers. Scattered around the pages, the reader will find a variety of quips, jokes and quotations, ... ...is still there so for readers like me who do not care for purple prose they are ideal.
There is also the ubiquitous Reader’s Digest Prize Draw where customers and ex-customers of Reader’s Digest are sent an envelope inside which are a mass of papers that tells them that they have been specially selected as an entrant in the current draw. They are also invited to buy something as well. It is clamed that whether a person buys anything ...

Do you subscribe to readers digest? If you do read no further. If however, you are one of the very few who has entry into the next round of their prize draw, then beware.
I am always one of the very few in my county to be lucky enough to be sent draw tickets for entry into the next stage. As I won a £10 cheque a few years ago for returning a NO envelope to 'Which' magazine, I now return all the readers digest stuff in a NO envelope.
This week I ... ...a dictionary type book from readers digest, and was sent to me after I had stated NO.
I was on the phone and have now been told how to return it free of charge, but I am sure this type of selling would lead many others into buying it, just because people will not be bothered to send it back, or are too embarrassed to send it back.
BEWARE of this sales technique and if you get unwarranted sale items, ensure you return it. Don't let it cost you money! ...

Advantages: Great read, Compact, Variety of subjects Disadvantages: None
The Reader's Digest monthly magazine costs £2.50 per month if bought from a newsagents. A few years ago I actually subscribed for a year and saved about 30%. I think this magazine is an excellent buy as it has many different articles for everyone's taste. It must be good because it boasts some 25 million copies issued in 19 different languages (July 2001 edition refers). At the front is a list of contents for that month's issue. These are based both ... ...every issue is the "Word Power" page. What this section does is identifies 20 different words & gives 3 meanings. 2 are false & one is true. I therefore can test my knowledge & see if I give the correct definition. On the following pages are the answers & points awarded to see how many you get right. The ratings are: 20-19 Excellent 18-16 Good 15-14 Fair At the end of each article there are small anecdotes, some of which are very amusing e.g. (July ...

Advantages: Excellent quality - both magazine and books Disadvantages: Once they have your name on their list, they will NOT let you go. They are like leeches. You will get so much junk mail, you won't know what to do with it all
I have always enjoyed reading Reader's Digest - they have a lot of interesting articles, a condensed story, plus numerous areas of jokes, wordpower, etc where people can actually submit and earn some money from. Reader's Digest is actually a pretty good payer if you are lucky enough to get something you have written, into their pages. My problem with them is .... once they have your name - they will not let you go! They will bombard you with junk ... ...and their condensed books series. It gets to being so annoying, and for the amount they spend on this ton of junk mail they could maybe cut the price of the mag a bit.
There is a wealth of info in each one, heart-rending tales of animal and human heroes and heroines, overcoming all sorts of obstacles. Reader's Digest really is a good magazine. They spoil it though by their over zealous mailing campaigns. I, like Suzan, also enjoy their condensed ...

Advantages: Superbly comprehansive, very interesting and helpful Disadvantages: could cause some anxious people to avoid certain foodstuffs
Update: Whilst searching through the “ReadersDigest” website, I came across the link to order this book, I have not actually added anything to the opinion, just adding the link and also a correction in the price I said, I was sure I paid around £15.00 for the book, but on this link it is priced at £26.99, whether the price has shot up or I got it on Special offer, I couldn’t really tell you.
Anyway, here is the link, if anyone is interested in buying it:

Advantages: Recipes easy to follow, really yummy pictures Disadvantages: Too many fancy dishes, 30 minutes is a bit optimistic unless you are well-prepared
and if you have all the right ingredients then you?re well set, there is even a section at the end on menu planning if you want some ideas.
I can?t even knock up beans on toast in 30 minutes never mind Bulgur Pilaf with Mushrooms (which they would hate anyway because it doesn?t come with chips), so you want to feed a family I would recommend sticking with your own tried and trusted favourites and save this book for those with more discerning palates.
the book is about £24.99 from Reader?sDigest?s own website www.readersdigest.co.uk, it?s also available at Amazon or whsmithonline for about £12.99. I?m sure you could find it cheaper if you looked around. ...
