Daphne du Maurier

Advantages: Excellent reads
Disadvantages: Only if you don't read any!

Daphne du Maurier was a true when it comes to novelists. She had written some of the best books of her time which continues to be a source of enjoyment for readers all over the world. Perhaps her most well known books are Rebecca, Jamaica Inn and Frenchman's Creek but there are so many more novels and short stories to enjoy. Her first novel was The Loving Spirit, a story about one Cornish family through many generations and their fight to survive while making a living from building boats. In contrast, her last book, The House on the Strand is about a man who begins taking some kind of drug which enables him to go into the past where he learns about Cornwall from many years ago. Both of these books would make excellent films - I have no idea why they haven't been snatched up. Everyone should read at least one du Maurier book! ...

Review of Daphne Du Maurier

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again"

Advantages: Chilling, romantic, thrilling, gothic - it's got it all !!
Disadvantages: None

REBECCA Just hearing that line -"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again" gives me goose bumps!! I just LOVE this book. I first read it as a young teenager, many years ago, after my godmother introduced me to Du Maurier's work and I was immediately hooked. It is a book that I return to over and over again. If you have not read 'Rebecca', I envy you, you cannot unread the books you have read. You have all that mystery ahead of you, you are about to be completely and utterly absorbed in one of the best stories I have ever read. Don't read 'Rebecca' expecting to read a classic love story, because that is not what it is. 'Rebecca' IS about love, both past and present, but it is also a thriller, dark, almost Gothic, creepy but most of all intriguing. After the initial haunting, atmospheric words the beginning ...

Review of Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier

A Classic

Advantages: well developed characters and story, reads well
Disadvantages: slow to start

Rebecca is, in my opinion, Du Maurier's best work. The intricate story is woven around a young nameless woman who finds herself accepting the infamous Maxim de Winter's marriage proposal after only a few days acquaintance. The plot then thickens as his dead Ex-wife, Rebecca, is continually present in their lives throught the efforts of the somewhat mysterious and frightening Mrs Danvers. However as Mrs De Winters learns more and more of her husband and his wife's past, the true nature of Rebecca's character is thrown into speculation. the plot twist and turns and has a fantastic ending. The narrative is also rich from Du Mauriers language and expressive style- such as the way she creates such an atmospheric eerie settiing out of Manderly. It is easy to read and gripping. ...
