Denon is music and movies to your ears! Advantages: quality, amazing sound, good looks, value for money Disadvantages: no HDMI input (but thats changed on newer models) ...this price point, this particular Denon AVR has gone from 1900 to 1910 (as the current model) thus the model before the 1907 was the 1906 and the one after was the 1908, well, you get the idea. Which each release the general product is improved. There are models both up and down, with Denon’s flagship Audio-Visual Receiver the AVR-4810 leading the way with 9.1 channels and more inputs than you can shake a stick at. Of course, the price reflects the ... ...speakers and a shiny new Denon upscaling dvd player, I opted for this AVR. At the time it cost me £350, though it seems prices have risen a little since. No surprise really as you now get HDMI input and output in the newer models including DTS HD and True Dolby Digital HD. Onkyo TX-SR606 - great value Advantages: great connectivity, great 720p (1080i) upscaler, great looks, excellent clarity of sound. Disadvantages: Doesn't upscale to 1080p, a 4th HDMI would be useful. Bought one of these for a great price on eBay at the same time as the 607 was launched. I paid £300 It offers terrific value at the price I paid. In these times of a mixrure of signals from SD to HD, this machine is particuarly useful as it offers a built in scaler that can upscale all of your inputs to 1080i or 720p. (The newer 607 upsclaes to 1080p I believe but apart from blue-ray, just about all transmitted HD signals offered by Sku and VirginMedia ... ...importanmt feature for me as I have a large number of inputs and it was becoming a nighmare to feed into my plasma. This machine also offers terrific sound. It has a nice clear subtle green display so that you know what it's up to! As for features, it would be pointmess to reproduce those in a review as you'll have already read those if you're contemplating the puchase of this AV-amp. Bush RPA1 - A useful product with some drawbacks Advantages: Compact, cheap, radio performance satisfactory, has a record turntable Disadvantages: Performance through own speakers fair only, turntable performance (see text) I bought one of these (two actually-one was a present) in a sale about two years ago. I paid under GBP 10 per set, which was remarkable. Normal retail price appears to be in the GBP 35-45 range. The unit comprises a range of features that wouldn't have been hard to find a generation or so ago, but which are rare now. What we have here is what used to be called a radiogram - a combination of radio and record player with built - in speakers. The radio part includes an analogue tuner with medium wave and stereo FM (there's no LW), There is a facility for switching off the stereo decoder in case of poor reception, and a red LED indicator to aid tuning. Onkyo TX-SR 605 - What a brilliant Amp! Advantages: Numerous Dolby and DTS settings. Easy to setup. Disadvantages: None that I have found. This amplifier is an excellent starting point into Home Cinema. Features Dolby D, DTS, DTS-HD, a range of inbuilt Dolby and DTS types to suit your listening preferences. The remote is multifunctional in that you can control your TV, Satellite Box, DVD; as long as you know the input codes and read the instructions. Denon sound systems are among the best Advantages: Lots of inputs. HDMI support. Good controls. Auto-switching for Dolby 5.1 Disadvantages: Menus are sometimes fiddly. No menu on TV, only on small screen. I can't fault the Denon brand for home theatre systems. There are a lot of cheap 5.1 systems nowadays that are very tempting, but if you want a true hair-raising experience, it's nice to go for something with substance - an amplifier like this one. We've used ours to replace our ageing hi-fi alongside a Denon DVD player and a Bush turntable. The sound is so fantastic that we have never gone back to using the TV's inbuilt speakers. The subtle sounds are reproduced very accurately and explosions etc are very good in proportion. The bass speaker, for example, shakes the floor like an earthquake in film scenes of high intensity.
