Classics are not just for Christmas
Review of A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens by ryanando

Advantages: The original story is always the best. Short, easy, cheap.
Disadvantages: funny looks when it's not December, A-Z doesn't include everything.

A pile of books up to your knee? Amateur. I suspect mine would come up to at least my shoulder if I could persuade them not to fall over. That said, my in-pile doesn't include anything "classic" and I can't help but feel that's an oversight. A bit of Dickens would be a welcome touch of culture and this one sounds like a good place to start. by jonathanb

Be careful with that portrait in the attic
Review of The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde by JOHNV

Advantages: Fascinating, often witty but ultimately horrifying story
Disadvantages: Style a little overblown on occasion

The book ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray' was Oscar Wilde's only full-length novel. Like his plays, it is brimming with his characteristic half-teasing half-serious one-liners, and his personal views on life and art. At the start of his Preface he info ... Read review

A Thrilling Novel full of Love and Passion
Review of Wuthering heights - Emily Bronte by Trynewthings

Advantages: Pulls the reader in and keeps him or her captive in it's embrace.
Disadvantages: Advanced language and vocabulary, and quite passionately bittersweet.

I stumbled upon Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and found that it is an intriguing story of doomed love, bound to entrance readers with it’s bittersweet plot, lovable characters, and unquenchable emotions. Suspense and powerful feelings are added to kee ... Read review

Review of Portrait of the artist as a young man - James Joyce by 1st2thebar

Two privileged people from the Jazz Age
Review of The Beautiful and Damned - F. Scott Fitzgerald by JOHNV

Advantages: Atmospheric if rather cruel story of two people during the era
Disadvantages: Unsympathetic, unlikeable characters

I picked up this book to read partly as a challenge. Firstly, I had not read any early 20th century American fiction for some years, my experience consisting largely of some of Hemingway’s titles some years ago. Secondly, I was interested in finding out ... Read review

Advantages: Ties up Austen's loose ends neatly, should appeal to Austen fans
Disadvantages: Not much of a mystery, too focused on Darcy and not enough sparkling wit

Disadvantages: Rather thin on plot; compares unfavourably to 'Jane Eyre'
