The Mayor of Casterbridge - an under-rated Hardy gem?
Review of The Mayor of Casterbridge - Thomas Hardy by inkyscribbles

Advantages: Easy to read, not a bad book
Disadvantages: Not the most action-packed of novels, not very dynamic characters

Thomas Hardy is often perceived as a bit of a marmite writer; readers either love him or hate him. It is easy to appreciate elements of his writing, whether it lies in characterisation, descriptive passages or plot construction - but finding an example of ... Read review

I had to read this at school, about forty years ago (!) and didn't much like it then... however I liked even less the (few) other Hardy books I tried, so I'm not a fan. But perhaps I should read this again... by Kukana

A good classic read
Review of Silas Marner (The Weaver of Raveloe) - George Eliot by bettyboo47

Advantages: easy to r get into, highly descriptive
Disadvantages: old fashioned language used at times

Since I acquired a kindle, I have begun to read my way through the many classic books that are available free of charge. I at first tackled them with the purpose of educating myself, starting with one of the hardest Don Quixote by Cervantes which I wante ... Read review

Puny white boy becomes king of the jungle swingers!
Review of Tarzan of the Apes - Edgar Rice Burroughs by Mauri

Advantages: A real page turner
Disadvantages: Some of the attitudes expressed are old fashioned to the modern reader

In western literature there are many examples of characters and stories that have since their first introduction become part of our everyday popular culture. So when we speak of Frankenstein, Dracula and Sherlock Holmes the vast majority of people know wh ... Read review

A classic not read at school
Review of Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen by lottehusbands

Advantages: amazing read, classic
Disadvantages: -

To my dismay at school whilst you heard about the classic writers like Dickens and Shakespeare, the only female 'classic' author stated was Austen and unlike the others none of her works were ever read or studied by classes and there was no reason why. Pr ... Read review

Why it's a sin to Kill a Mockingbird
Review of To Kill A Mockingbird: 50th Anniversary edition - Harper Lee by brokenangelkisses

Advantages: strong moral messages conveyed in a realistic story with well-rounded characters
Disadvantages: readers really need to be aware of the context to fully appreciate some elements

Not all books repay rereading; this one does. Harder Lee's 1960 novel is considered a masterpiece of American literature - it won the Pulitzer Prize - and has been part of the school curriculum in America and the UK for many years. Disliking the public sc ... Read review
