My first trip to Estonia via fiction
Review of Watching the Dark - Peter Robinson by cha97michelle

Advantages: Very engaging characters and plot, realistic situations
Disadvantages: descriptions are rather lengthy.

Peter Robinson was a new to me author when I picked this up in the library. The only preconception I had was that it had the tagline Number one bestselling author on the cover, so I thought as it was in my favourite genre of crime it was worth a read. T ... Read review

Several things I didn't know about bounty hunting
Review of One for the money - Janet Evanovich by maklhouf

Advantages: light, but with serious insights
Disadvantages: difficult to classify, but that may not be a disadvantage

I didn't know that, in 1995 you could go to a gun store in New Jersey and buy a self defence spray that contained a form of nerve gas. This is the USA at a particular time, fascinating to those of us who come from a place where there are no bounty hunters ... Read review

"Is this no vampires I see before me?"
Review of Shakespeare's Landlord: A Lily Bard Mystery - Charlaine Harris by sharper_fin

Advantages: It's a great character study
Disadvantages: It's an average murder mystery

Let's get this out of the way right at the beginning. This book has nothing whatsoever to do with William Shakespeare. It's not written in Ye Olde English and there are no ruffed collars to be found. What it is is a very decent 'whodunnit' murder mystery ... Read review

A beautiful book about horrible people doing horrible things
Review of Adultory - Paulo Coelho by koshkha

Advantages: Fascinating and disturbing
Disadvantages: Lacking any characters you can like

A bit on the side? Adultery by Paulo Coelho is a beautifully written tale of unpleasant people doing unpleasant things to each other in the name of love, lust, boredom or depression. It’s a story where you’ll have to look quite hard to find anybody to ... Read review

Monsters Are Real
Review of Menagerie - E. Stuart Marlowe by pdoyle007

Advantages: A novel and original idea
Disadvantages: Disjoined and a little rushed

Not my favourite from this author, but still worth a read.
Review of Beneath The Bleeding - Val Mcdermid by cha97michelle

Advantages: well developed characters who are gritty
Disadvantages: bit far fetched for me, lacking a bit of something.

Beneath the Bleeding is part of Val McDermid's crime series featuring criminal profiler Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan. They are assigned cases of major crime incidences, and this book has a doozy of a case that leaves them all confused as to the motive. ... Read review

Childhood Nostalgia
Review of Twins At St. Clare's - Enid Blyton by Kukana

Advantages: Encourages children to read, moral issues absorbed effortlessly, good stories
Disadvantages: Not the greatest writing, caricatures abound, unlikely to appeal to today's teens

A neatly connected mystery
Review of Children of the Revolution: A DCI Banks Mystery - Peter Robinson by cha97michelle

Advantages: great believable characters, not too predictable, well crafted thorough stories
Disadvantages: long winded descriptions, and chapters are a bit long for my liking.

Peter Robinson is a fairly new discovery on me as an author, and I have recently read a couple of his novels. He has an approach that is slightly different to other novelists I find, and I have enjoyed discovering someone new within my favourite genre. ... Read review
