Diamond review   The Blessing of Gnome
Review of Private Eye by torr

Advantages: Still an amusing antidote to the arrogance of power
Disadvantages: Less funny than it was?

The fiftieth anniversary issue of Private Eye has just landed through my letter-box, prompting me to reflect on this venerable – and valuable – institution. Having been a regular reader more or less throughout its history, and a subscriber for the past ... Read review

Who watches the watchers?
Review of Private Eye by cootuk

Advantages: Satirical, funny, a little bit sick
Disadvantages: Not always the truth, but close enough?

Private Eye has been a thorn in the side of many governments, people, and industries over the years. The magazine (£1.30 per issue) dishes the dirt that those in power would rather you didn't know. Anyone and anything is fair game. The magazine is pack ... Read review

The world is divided between those who read Private Eye religously (like myself) and those who detest everything it stands for (like certain members of my family!) The only other thing I would add to this review is the investigative journalism role that the Eye still plays in the British media - some of the issues are trivial and funny, but they also are not afraid to tackle subjects that the more mainstream press shy away from (as their frequent court cases and hefty legal fees must surely testify!) by starshapedbrick

Bizaare choice nicely done Ben :) by Glorificus1
A long hard read this one ! A nice if not eccentric view on things from here eh ! As for starting with #11 , nothing new here , as I have seen many a publication do the same . The 1st '1' refers to series , the 2nd '1' to number . However if 10 or more issues are released in a year you get probelms , ie 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,110,111, etc. by CaptainKidd

What, Me Worry...
Review of Mad Magazine by Sarah_B

Advantages: Hilarious, with plenty of "real" content - parody sketches, fake advertisements, special features, and that beloved Fold-In.

This opinion seems (partly) blike it was based on Mad of the 1970s or 1980s. It is interesting but not terribly relevant. I don't agree with Sarah about the emphasis on drug humor. If that were the case, I wouldn't read it! Mad is a good magazine but not great as it once was. by 1789
Wow, I haven't read a Mad Magazine since I was a kid. I'd forgotten all about how funny it is. I will have to go look this one up again. Thanks for the reminder and a great op. Peace, Shadowtwin by Shadowtwinchaos

Great Op!! Douglas by Douglas334
Even though I've been subscribing to Private Eye for a while, there were things in your op that I had been previously unaware of. Nice one! I must disagree with you about Victor Lewis Smith's column though. It is funny, but it is also quite often old. I read some of these stories on various other sources sometimes months before they appear in his column in the Eye. Same as when he does a similar column for the Big Issue. I'm not impressed. by stravaig
