Hungary's Saturday Place is Great Any Day
Review of Szombathely (Hungary) by
fizzytom
Advantages: Handsome old city with lots to see and do; more accessible than you might think
Disadvantages: Lack of eating places in centre; odd opening hours of some attractions
...recently the Hungarian city of Szombathely was, for me, just a name on the map. I’ve been to Hungary, and to the west in particular, on several occasions but somehow always managed to avoid Szombathely, either by design or accident. Then I ch ...

The Lady of the Lake
Review of Keszthely, Hungary by
fizzytom
Advantages: Town with plenty to do, plenty to do locally, great food, the lake
Disadvantages: Sundays are pretty dead out of season
The great thing about Lake Balaton is the diversity of resorts and entertainment/activities based on its shores. Siofok is popular with a young crowd who party all night and spend the day sleeping it off; the Tihany peninsula is a mecca for hikers and na ...

Tihany - Balaton's Little Treasure
Review of Tihany Village & Peninsula, Tihany by
fizzytom
Advantages: A beautiful part of central Europe, food and accommodation are good value, lots to do and see
Disadvantages: May be too quiet in the evenings for some
Lake Balaton is variously described as Hungary's summer playground or Hungary's "inland sea" but it is, most simply, Europe's largest freshwater lake. It measures some 77 kilometres at its longest, 14 kilometres at its widest point and covers an area of 5 ...

A Town with Stunning Architecture and Home of Bull's Blood
Review of Eger (Hungary) by
Praski
Advantages: Interesting architecture, atmospheric inns, good wine drinking area, thermal baths
Disadvantages: Takes two hours from Budapest - might be too far for visitors to Budapest
Eger is architecturally a very interesting town. It lies 128 kilometres from Budapest and is also famous for being the home of Bull's Blood wine. The town is bursting with baroque architecture and has more listed buildings than any other towns in Hungary, ...

City of Sunshine!
Review of Szeged (Hungary) by
marksz91
Advantages: Beutiful, vibrant city with everything you want and need for a perfect holiday
Disadvantages: homeless people tend to move into this city for summer (not as bad as London, or any big city)
To be honest I visit Szeged around 5 times a year and I spend at least a month of my holiday in the summer there! I just love it
From Budapest there is a highway straight to Szeged (approx. 1:30 hour drive). If you dont want to go by car, no problem ther ...

So Spa, So Good
Review of Lake Balaton (Hungary) by

Advantages: Stunning scenery, variety of activiites, great wines
Disadvantages: Frequent storms in summer, can get very busy

Review of General: Hungary by
athenajm69
Advantages: not too many tourists, hot in the summer and snow in the winter
Disadvantages: none
I stayed in Hungary for five weeks a few years ago as part of a university experience. During that time I travelled around a few different places, off the tourist track and discovered the real country. My friend Zsuzsa showed me around her country and tok ...

Beautiful Hungarian village
Review of Szentendre (Hungary) by
athenajm69
Advantages: Picturesque and easy to get to
Disadvantages: None
My boyfriend and i visited this village in December and loved the experience. We did not go as part of an organised tour as we found that it was fairly easy to get to from Budapest, even if you don't speak Hungarian. We spent half a day in the village loo ...

Review of General: Hungary by
Razogeto999

If somebody had already been to Hungary or had heard about this country, then their first reaction is related to Budapest, the capital with two million inhabitants. It is a huge European city with a real metropolitan dynamism that you can hardly find in a ...

Thirsting for Hungary...or, so prone to Sopron
Review of Sopron (Hungary) by
proxam
Advantages: Well preserved and beautiful Old Town
Disadvantages: Outskirts are a bit dismal
SOPRON in Hungary, and the area around it, is surrounded almost completely by Austria. In fact a referendum was held there after WW1 - and the break-up of the Austria-Hungarian Empire, to decide which country it would belong to with the residents de ...

Shop Ron, Shop
Review of General: Hungary by
zoe_page
Advantages: ..
Disadvantages: ..
Shop-Ron is how Germans pronounce Sopron. An odd name, in many ways, from a British perspective at least since there are very few shops.
Sopron is Hungary's "Most Loyal Town" because a very long time ago its residents were offered the chance to become ...

I will never forget the taste of pigman-schnitzel
Review of Lake Balaton (Hungary) by
Amadahn
Advantages: Very cheap, very pretty
Disadvantages: Surly locals, scary (though tasty) food
I never found out if a pigman-schnitzel was a schnitzel eaten by pigmen, or one that was made from them. In fact, I never even found out what a pigman was, although I could probably hazard a guess. Perhaps there are some things that people are just not ...
