The ruins of the second capital city of Sikkim
Review of Rabdentse Ruins, Pelling by koshkha

Advantages: Beautifully neat and tidy with stunning views
Disadvantages: A bit of a trek and no facilities when you get there.

Not quite Disneyland The tiny Himalayan town of Pelling in the state of Sikkim is not overly blessed with world-class attractions. Thatís not a problem because you donít go there expecting Disneyland; you go for the views, the mountain air, and to es ... Read review

Handy and Crafty?

Advantages: I like to hope it's making a major contribution to training local students......
Disadvantages: .....but as a tourist attraction it's a bit of a 'miss'.

Thatíll come in handi(crafts) During our visit to West Bengal and Sikkim in October 2013, we stayed twice in the Sikkimese capital city of Gangtok. The first time we were just passing through and our main tourism programme was during our second stay. ... Read review

Putting a (holy) foot in it.
Review of Khecheopalri Lake, Near Pelling, Sikkim by koshkha

Advantages: Beautiful views, perfect clean, fresh air
Disadvantages: Best avoided when it's really busy

Lake Life Khecheopalri Lake is located about 30 km from the small town of Pelling in the west of the Indian state of Sikkim. We visited whilst we were staying in Pelling and it took around one and a half hours to drive there. This is pretty typical o ... Read review

High on a Hill Side Outside Darjeeling
Review of Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre, Darjeeling by koshkha

Advantages: It's a unique opportunity to observe a community in exile
Disadvantages: It can feel awkward and uncomfortable.

Totally agree. There are a few of these places in the countries that border Tibet... and we need to go and take note... that the products are not the finest quality is part of the point. These aren't experts at anything, they're ordinary people trying to make a living at things which at home they'd just do for themselves and their neighbours... Interested that you'd see it as patronising to buy something you don't want. The Big Issue wouldn't survive on that basis - indeed a lot of modern big business wouldn't either: so on second thoughts, perhaps if none of us bought stuff we don't want.... hmmm. Might need to think a bit more about that one. Lx by hiker

Dodging the Rain and Listening to the Monks
Review of Zong Dog Palri Fo Brang Monastery, Kalimpong by koshkha

Advantages: We had a fantastic time
Disadvantages: If you don't turn up during a service, you may not get why we loved it so much.

What Dog? Zong Dog Palri Fo Brang Gompa is also known by the slightly easier to pronounce and remember (but rather less fun) name of Durpin Monastery because it stands on Durpin Hill in Kalimpong. It was neither the oldest, nor the most beautiful of ... Read review

There is a very special atmosphere in Buddhist temples. & I'd support your last comment - I've been in a number of temples and churches of various denominations during services, as a tourist. I've never felt anything but welcome. Of course, one has to be respectful - but if you're not, why would you be there in the first place. by hiker
Malu, if they sat quietly at the back and didn't disturb anyone like we did, then I'm sure they'd be treated as we were. And ironically, when we went to Durham Cathedral last summer, there was a group of Buddhist monks wandering around. by koshkha

Advantages: Awesome collection of cacti
Disadvantages: Look but don't touch

In Praise of Mediocrity
Review of Himachal State Museum, Shimla by koshkha

Advantages: Plenty of 'stuff' to see
Disadvantages: Not the most imaginative of displays

Set your expectations accordingly Like many of India's cities, Shimla has a rather second rate museum. To be fair, India's not that great at the whole museum thing although I fear that a lot of that's the fault of the British. In Victorian and Edward ... Read review

Review of Dalai Lama Temple (Tsuglagkhang Temple), Dharamsala by koshkha

Advantages: The Dalai Lama doesn't need to be there to make the place feel special
