Alright Guv?
Review of British Language & Culture - Lonely Planet by Essexgirl2006

Advantages: Amusing and easily accessible book
Disadvantages: A bit too broad a topic covered in such a small book

As a member of the Amazon Vine* programme, I was intrigued when this item came up to order and review. I am a big fan of the Lonely Planet guide books and was interested to see how a book on my own language and culture would be written. The target audienc ... Read review

Advantages: useful - cheap - small - easy to use
Disadvantages: Can't think of anything right now, I'll get back to you on that. (Sorry)

In five words: this book saved my life! I went to live in France at the age of seven. I managed to learn the 'native' language in under six months and I can thank this book for it. As well as being at that age where I could pick up the language without to ... Read review

The Sword Instructs The Pen
Review of Stylish Academic Writing - Helen Sword by a-true-ben

Advantages: An admirable aim of improving academic writing, easy to read and well illustrated
Disadvantages: Short on concrete suggestions and I don't agree with all her criticisms

It sometimes surprises those who know little of the workings of academia that the lecturers entrusted to teach students receive little, if any, formal pedagogical training. What – on reflection – seems almost equally surprising is that most academics, for ... Read review

Thorough review. by IzzyS
Excellent, and such a great topic - it's so very true that writing is never really taught, you're just supposed to muddle along at the end. Worked in my advantage, I reckon, but I do feel for people struggling to express grand ideas about sciences, etc, with little help on the English side. by Calypte
