Wild Wales, tame Wales, sweet harp
Review of Aros - Delyth Jenkins by 2mennycds

Advantages: Different, soothing, scintillating
Disadvantages: Some may possibly find it a bit "samey"

I stumbled across a CD by Delyth Jenkins (serves me right, should have looked where I was going!) called Llais. It features harp music and some spoken narrative of Dylan Thomas. I’d never heard of her until then. I do love the sound of “folk” or “celtic ... Read review

An original and innovative album that has stood the test of time.
Review of Hergest Ridge - Mike Oldfield by Nymphypig

Advantages: Brilliantly innovative album - 40 minutes of quality music
Disadvantages: Not for you if you don't like instrumentals

It's fair to say that when it comes to music, my tastes have been very heavily influenced by my dad. I was always more of a bookworm, so didn't get round to buying anything on which I could play music of my own choice until long after I'd become independe ... Read review

Good review! by AliceBond
Everybody thinks of Tubular Bells but Oldfield has made so much good music since. Hergest Ridge was widely considered the poor man's Tubular Bells, but it has its merits. by mikemelmak

Thirteen "Mo'" shades of blues?
Review of Keb' Mo' - Keb' Mo' by 2mennycds

Advantages: Varied tempos and moods, catchy, great instrumentation and singing
Disadvantages: A couple of weaker tracks?

This album was “Keb Mo’s” debut album under that name. Lovers of the English language may unfortunately be alienated right away as I disclose that this is a “street-talk” version of his real name, Kevin Moore! Let’s not be too hasty, though... This album ... Read review

Lovely compilation of a loved and missed legendary performer
Review of Best of John Renbourn [Castle] - John Renbourn by 2mennycds

Advantages: Range of songs and instrumentals, folk, blues and jazzy elements
Disadvantages: Er... none

I bought this quite some time ago. The vinyl I had of one of John’s albums was obsolete and this seemed an ideal way to get hold of some of the tunes that had been on it in CD format, as well as discovering some more of his material. And – I’m a bit as ... Read review

A change in direction.. but not quality
Review of The Night Creeper - Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats by dangaroo

Advantages: Slight change in style, still dark, exceptional mystical lyrics
Disadvantages: Doesn't work well being played backwards!

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats I came across and Uncle Acid song years ago on Youtube, at the time they hadn't released any albums but there were a few copies of an album called Volume 1, which was either never officially released or only sold in limit ... Read review

Sunny and dark guitar playing
Review of Sunny Side of the Ocean - John Fahey by 2mennycds

Advantages: Original style, fresh renditions of trad tunes, solid originals
Disadvantages: Substandard sound quality, shambolic track listing on sleeve

This is a tough album to review, but I’ll do my best. It’s tough to review because its strengths are considerable and it only has a couple of weaknesses. That weakness wouldn’t matter too much to someone coming to Fahey’s music for the first time. But t ... Read review

Review of Condemned to Hope - Black Moth by dangaroo

Advantages: Gets better with more listens, nice vocals and fantastic guitar work
Disadvantages: Some might find it not catchy enough

Black Moth Black Moth have toured with some pretty big names and didn't look out of place at all, in fact the only band that I thought was up there with them was Uncle Acid, I prefer Black Moth to Turbowolf, Red Fang and Truckfighters, I find their s ... Read review

Review of Baby Metal (2015) - Baby Metal by Nymphypig

Advantages: Upbeat, cute, catchy, and metal
Disadvantages: Bit of a gimmick, but no more so than kiss

At first I thought this review was going to be a challenge for me - how on earth do you properly review a band whose lyrics you don't understand, barring the odd few words. Then, having calmed down slightly, I recalled that in my previous ciao incarnation ... Read review

Review of Irish Guitar Encores - El McMeen by 2mennycds

Advantages: Beautiful and soleful playing, varied tempo and "mood"
Disadvantages: Some may find solo guitar arrangements a bit "samey"

I first came across this guitar player through a catalogue of guitar tutorial material (at the time it was videos and books; now it’s DVDs and books!) produced by the great Stefan Grossman. Many of the tunes on this album are featured on an El McMeen guit ... Read review

Review of Definitive Collection - Ralph McTell by 2mennycds

Advantages: Good selection from a range of albums, some outstanding songs
Disadvantages: Hard to source at a decent price

The best title? This isn’t the first compilation of Ralph McTell’s music, and compilations always pose a titling problem. For commercial bands “Greatest hits” makes both the selection and titling process straightforward. For non-commercial performe ... Read review

Disadvantages: Long Names, Long Songs, Not Catchy or Melodic enough

One of the greatest melodic death metal bands from the UK
Review of Dormant Heart - Sylosis by RobWK

Advantages: Talented release overflowing with passion and intrigue
Disadvantages: When you love this kind of music, none.

Review of Ralph, Albert & Sydney (Live Recording) - Ralph McTell by 2mennycds

Advantages: Great collection of earlyish Ralph, thought provoking, warm
Disadvantages: May be difficult to source

Disadvantages: Will make a guitar player green with envy!

There’s something not right about this album. In fact, to me, there’s something a bit indecent about it. I don’t mean the lyrics – there aren’t any. So let me explain. With my tongue firmly in my cheek, I hasten to add! Indecent?! Tony McManus is ... Read review

Review of Gone Woman Blues - Rory Block by 2mennycds

Advantages: Authentic but not slavishly copied
Disadvantages: None - but it's blues, so not to all tastes
