Hungary's Saturday Place is Great Any Day
Review of Szombathely (Hungary) by fizzytom

Advantages: Handsome old city with lots to see and do; more accessible than you might think
Disadvantages: Lack of eating places in centre; odd opening hours of some attractions

...recently the Hungarian city of Szombathely was, for me, just a name on the map. I’ve been to Hungary, and to the west in particular, on several occasions but somehow always managed to avoid Szombathely, either by design or accident. Then I ch ... Read review

Szombathely's Roman Ruins
Review of Istvan Jardanyi Paulovics Ruin Garden, Szombathely by fizzytom

Advantages: Well preserved mosaic sections; cheap admission; well kept gardens
Disadvantages: Really needs a guided tour to get more out of a visit

Long before the Magyars decided to perplex non-Hungarians by naming this settlement in western Hungary "Szombathely" (pronounced Tsom-bat-aye) the Romans simply referred to it as Savaria. Excavations have revealed Roman remains in several locations in the ... Read review

Hungarian Hoarder
Review of Smidt Museum, Szombathely by fizzytom

Advantages: Wide ranging exhibition with a local slant; cheap admission
Disadvantages: Very few English captions; lots of stuff I wasn't personally interested in

What do you give the man who has everything? In the case of Dr. Lajos Smidt, you’d better make it a museum. In fact, the Szombathely surgeon had so much stuff that when he retired he gave his entire collection to the local municipality who put it all on d ... Read review

Waiting for Godor
Review of Godor Restaurant, Szombathely by fizzytom

Advantages: Excellent value; lots of traditional choices; pleasant staff; menu in English
Disadvantages: Portions can seem oppressive; steep stairs at entrance

Szombathely is a funny old town; partly this is because it’s in Hungary, a country I like a lot, but which often defies comprehension. I knew of the town by name only and didn’t know anything else until I picked up a promotional brochure for the “Via Urbu ... Read review

The Road to Tihany Pier
Review of Steg Pizzeria, Tihany by fizzytom

Advantages: Fair prices; enough food choice; open when others aren't
Disadvantages: No Hungarian beers

Only a handful of the pubs and restaurants in the towns and villages on Hungary’s Lake Balaton open year round. We visited for the second time in May 2011 and found that the resorts were only now slowly gearing up for the oncoming season; facades were bei ... Read review

May Night at the Oasis
Review of Oasis Restaurant, Tihany by fizzytom

Advantages: Lovely surroundings, great value Hungarian food
Disadvantages: My meat was very fatty

Mid May is still not tourist season at Balaton though the restaurants are starting to prepare for the arrival of holiday makers. The day trippers are just starting to come and many restaurants open for lunch but are not yet open in the evenings. At Tihany ... Read review

Pracatan!!! (Sorry, I could never resist a cheap laugh)
Review of Margareta Restaurant, Keszthely by fizzytom

Advantages: Delicious food; good value; friendly, helpful staff
Disadvantages: Not so great for veggies

I am usually loathe to go with guidebook recommendations for restaurants; places could be under new ownership, the menu might have changed and, besides, I find it more fun to find places myself. There are times, though, that the guidebook comes in useful ... Read review

Disadvantages: Pricy for an attraction in Hungary; lack of info about exhibits and history

The Lady of the Lake
Review of Keszthely, Hungary by fizzytom

Advantages: Town with plenty to do, plenty to do locally, great food, the lake
Disadvantages: Sundays are pretty dead out of season

The great thing about Lake Balaton is the diversity of resorts and entertainment/activities based on its shores. Siofok is popular with a young crowd who party all night and spend the day sleeping it off; the Tihany peninsula is a mecca for hikers and na ... Read review

Tihany - Balaton's Little Treasure
Review of Tihany Village & Peninsula, Tihany by fizzytom

Advantages: A beautiful part of central Europe, food and accommodation are good value, lots to do and see
Disadvantages: May be too quiet in the evenings for some

Lake Balaton is variously described as Hungary's summer playground or Hungary's "inland sea" but it is, most simply, Europe's largest freshwater lake. It measures some 77 kilometres at its longest, 14 kilometres at its widest point and covers an area of 5 ... Read review

Advantages: Interesting architecture, atmospheric inns, good wine drinking area, thermal baths
Disadvantages: Takes two hours from Budapest - might be too far for visitors to Budapest
