I think it's a great shame that Latin is no longer as widely taught these days - people mock it, but it's so useful for understanding the base meaning (and indeed, the spelling) of the majority of words in our language today. I found too, that although I'd never had a single formal Italian lesson, I was able to understand an enormous amount when we visited Italy, all thanks to having learned Latin at school. And yes, we were taught to pronounce the letter 'v' as a 'w'! by silverstreak
