Superficial and Repetitive
Review of Frommer's Marrakech Day by Day - Kerry Walker by koshkha

Advantages: At least it doesn't weigh much
Disadvantages: Superficial and silly. Poorly structured and annoying

Travelling Light I have a few ideal travel companions; my husband, my bear, a hefty first aid kit and the Dorling Kindersley guide to wherever I’m going. Everything else is a bonus. If easyJet and Ryanair have their way, that’ll be pretty much any of ... Read review

Apples are from Kazakhstan
Review of In Search of Kazakhstan: The Land That Disappeared - Christopher Robbins by hiker

Advantages: Full of detail
Disadvantages: A bit naive in style

I've heard it said that since the release of the film Borat, tourism to Kazakhstan has rocketed. Having neither seen the film, nor being remotely inclined to, I cannot pass any comment on how likely that is. But having read Chris Robbins' book about the ... Read review

Move to the Country
Review of A House in Fez - Suzanna Clarke by hiker

Advantages: Interesting insights
Disadvantages: Somehow it didn't 'grab' me as much as I'd hoped

Perhaps it's a little unfair to come to A House in Fez still inspired by the storytelling of Tahir Shah's In Arabian Nights, because this is a very different take on Morocco, aimed (as a book) no doubt at a very different market, but reading the two in qu ... Read review

Review of Lonely Planet Pocket Sydney - Peter Dragicevich by Jo586

Advantages: Easy to locate information, doesn't take up a lot of room, map included
Disadvantages: You may want a book with a bit more detail and places

I have recently returned from a trip to Sydney which was made a lot easier thanks to this guide. Just before I left I received a Waterstone’s gift certificate which I used to purchase the book. I wanted to find something that was easy to read and nice a ... Read review

Review of Better Than Fiction - Lonely Planet by Essexgirl2006

Advantages: Lots of picture, interesting, inspiring, easy to dip into
Disadvantages: Sometimes implies Russ has done something he hasn't, some photos in the wrong sections

A treat for armchair travellers
Review of Best of Lonely Planet Travel Writing - Lonely Planet by koshkha

Advantages: A marvellous written buffet with plenty of choice and something for everyone
Disadvantages: A couple of duds amongst the diamonds

You can write, you can travel, but can you ‘travel write’? There’s a big difference between being a traveller and going on holiday. Some who go on holiday also travel, but many who travel are not on holiday. It may seem an odd distinction, but if you’ ... Read review

Japanese-ness
Review of Japan Through the Looking Glass - Alan Macfarlane by hiker

Advantages: Rare insights into an alien culture
Disadvantages: None - unless you have one of the early hardback editions where the pages fall out.
