I also have fond memories of this, particularly the little details such as Howard and Hilda's endless stream of matching, naff jumpers and Martin's obsession with having the phone receiver facing a certain way. I always found the character of Martin irritating and Paul much more interesting, but that was due to the skill of the writing as much as the acting. I'm surprised that Peter Egan didn't become a bigger star, as he's been excellent in everything I've seen him in but rarely has a lead role. by jonathanb

I actually thought there was quite a bit of opinion here, in spite of the review's brevity. I must admit, the only bit I tend to watch is where he tells them what he thinks of their efforts. Not a man to pussyfoot around! by silverstreak

Welcome to Ciao. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but personally the BBC and the programme do vet each candidate very thoroughly and obviously those who have passed the requirement are considered well before they get to appear on the the programme. The tasks set aren't in my mind, poor - they offer individual building techniques of many business approaches, one of which was highlighted very strongly in one episode where "strategy" had not been promoted or used, thus resulting in the failure of the task. Sugar wants to see how versatile each candidate can be in all manner of business, and those who are used to the fast-track selling process with accolades given to them and who consistently promote themselves through those goals, don't always appear to be what they say. Ability in individuals is always continuous, and developing. Those that don't wish to push themselves or appear to be stuck in a dream world of not improving get lost easily. Entrepreneurial talent is evident throughout the whole process of The Apprentice, but it doesn't automatically mean each individual will win each task - again, it's about growing with their experiences and learning new tasks and skills that they can apply to the next task before the final consideration - if they're lucky. by Nar2
