...of the role of a Recruitment Consultant from a man that has been doing this role for years.

In virtually all towns in the UK, you will find a recruitment agency. The most common are Reed, Adecco, Manpower, Brook Street and, the one I work for, Randstad. These agencies are populated by Consultants sat behind desks, who are specialists in their marketplace and job groupings.

This review will primarily concentrate on how ...

Premise of the job
==============

A Recruitment Consultant exists to provide a service to a job-seeker looking for work and an employer looking to recruit a quality worker for their team. For the Consultant who takes their job seriously, the science behind finding a candidate their ideal job, and resourcing the ideal worker for an employer is a challenging ... more

Recruitment Consultancies - Devils or Darlings?

Advantages: They really work on your behalf if you have a good history
Disadvantages: They can completely ignore you when they want to

...I've had various dealings with recruitment consultancies/agencies over the years in varying capacities, as a young woman unsure of what career path to take who decided temping would help make a decision. This is a very long review, so you might want to jump down to the last few paragraphs if you just want to read my tips about dealing with agencies. IN THE BEGINNING… I've had experience of using recruitment agencies since the late 80s when I started ...
...was not sticking to the recruitment policy, i.e. advertising positions internally before going outside, so I decided to move on to new pastures hoping for a new challenge and real prospects of promotion. I registered with a branch of Office Angels and was horrified when the consultant insisted on taking a Polaroid snap of me as it was my day off and I wasn't exactly dressed up in a suit (at that time I never actually possessed a business suit as ...

LADIES, GENTS - DOES SIZE MATTER

Advantages: See Text
Disadvantages: See Text

Recruitment consultancy's more commonly recognised as agencies come in all shapes and guises, big, small, local, national and multi-national. WHAT CAN A RECRUITMENT AGENCY DO FOR YOU? They deal in temporary and permanent vacancies and make their money from the charges they impose on the customer, aka the employer, NOT the employee. PERMANENT Often, within an area, a number of local agencies will advertise the same vacancy, and seek CV's from applicants ...
...a bad image to the recruitment agency and reduce the possibility of further work coming your way. WHAT SKILLS? Absolutely anything, from packing boxes and working on a production line, switchboard operations, secretarys, data entry operators, receptionists, clerks, adminisitrators, through to senior managers, nurses, doctors and accountants, although for the more professional and senior positions you may be advised to register with more specialised ...

...day I wandered into this recruitment agency in Edinburgh called Reed Employment. I had just lost yet another sales job, which wasn’t uncommon in those days as I had a drinking problem the size of the Empire State Building. After fabricating my career details on their application form, I had a sit down with a consultant, and told him I was looking for any well paying job in sales. After a short interval, up he gets, excuses himself, and says ...
...whether I have ever considered Recruitment Consultancy as a career. (I hadn’t, but what the hell, it wasn’t costing me anything to listen!) I am assured that I don’t NEED to know anything about the job market, and that the prime requirement is the gift of the gab, which I possessed in spades. So I am then offered a job with the agency. A fortnight later I have gone through a fairly intensive training course down in head office ...

Packet of three

Advantages: Sometimes they work
Disadvantages: Too many empty promises

...total law unto themselves, the recruitment consultants... The thing all these three types have got very much in common is their forced, and very feigned, deep sincerity and wish to make life better for you - Oh yeah? Well, I don't buy it, I've been stung too many times. Now, don't get me wrong, recruitment consultants ain't all like that, there are some good ones about here and there, but they are very much the exceptions that prove the rule. ...
...I've experienced loads of different recruitment consultancies who specialise in the area in which I work (accountancy - what d'you mean dull? I've had three columns of very big figures to add up today, and we're onto long division next week!), and I think I can say that I have not come across a single consultant who I could trust or whom I would wish to put any hope in whatsoever. The same applies to the online recruitment agencies where you're ...

Souless bloodsuckers

...I worked as a recruitment consultant. I apologise now and I know that I will need to do a lot of good stuff to stop me from going to hell now. You see the problem with recruitment consultants is as soon as they are given the job they have to legally hand in their soul. Recruitment agencies are not a bad thing. In many ways they do a very good job and they do help people get work. This is why I wanted the job. I had hit a dead end in my career and ...
...in our element. Firstly a recruitment agent does not respect a please do not contact my current employers statement. You see a reference provides the consultant with your bosses name (hence a contact high in a company), a phone number (no searching needed), and from your CV we know exactly the type of person they employ and what the job entails. You see a common misconception is that the consultant cares about the candidate. Nope. They do not give ...

Poor service recruitment consultant

Advantages: Large pool of employers(and employees)
Disadvantages: Expensive for employer, poor service

to try and remove them before the 13 week probationary period). I think a lot of the problem is that once a bit more information was obtained it was found they were fairly obviously wrong for the role. Hays probably could have discovered this before sending them for interview. It may also be that managers incorrectly stated their requirements. If you are a job seeker you get called in for a fairly short interview. Basically they try to find out what you are able to do and a bit about what you want. They generally offer some career advice although naturally will not recommend you stay where you are as they would lose their fee. They also state it is fairly easy to get an increase. One problem I is that if your recruitment consultant is not proactive in finding you options your CV may just be sat in his intray. Generally you need ...

Adecco - The recruitment consultants

Advantages: Lots of branches throughout London
Disadvantages: Like any agency, may not guarantee constant work

I used the Adecco branch in Hammersmith, London, from August of last year to July of this year for temporary work. They offer work in many sectors, with permanent and temporary contracts. I was down for office, admin and banking on their books. After an initial assessment test on the p.c's (testing proficiency on Word/Excel) then an interview with a consultant, it was roughly within 2 weeks before i got my first job. This was with a corporate charge card company and was a temporary contract which ran for 4 months. After this ended, within a week, i got another contract. This time for the BBC and although this again was temporary, it would be a 9 month placement between various BBC sites. Contact between Adecco consultants was very good. The consultant i dealt with during my time on their books visited the sites temps were working ...

good, swift service

Advantages: good alternative to traditional job search methods
Disadvantages: --

Used in May 09 I was looking for a quick way to get my CV out to recruitment consultants. I was already in a position and didn't have the time or desire to find, and then send out a CV to all of the relevant agencies. After I registered, they did all the work by forwarding my CV to recruiters for me. The recruiters that they send it to are all members fo CVtrumpet and the service is free for recruiters. The service is mainly geared towards those who are executive or management job searching, they do though cover many other positions though, including mine (account executive) all of which are listed on the registration page. i was happy with the quality of responses from recruitment consultants and would use again. ...
