Advantages Interesting concept - cheap to buy - good graphics - interesting sound effects
Disadvantages levels seem the same - a bit tricky to complete
Red Dead Revolver is brought to you by Rockstar Games - the producers of the Grand Theft Auto series of games and cost me £15.97 for a pre-owned copy from Game.
I'm a big fan of GTA and the back of the game contained the usual high ratings from the X-Box gaming magazines - I couldn't wait to play.A quick glance at the instruction booklet was all that was needed to get to grips with the controls - the basics being the analogue sticks to move the charcter and buttons and triggers to fire your weapons and scroll through the menus.
The main plot of the story behind the game is that you are Red, a cowboy who had his life shattered after witnessing the brutal murder of his family whilst he was a child - Now he's back as a bounty hunter and ready for revenge! The graphics to RDR are visually amazing - not because of the realism but because they are more akin to cartoons and are incredibly detailed right down to the emblem on the handle of Red's pistol. The backgrounds look like they have just stepped out of a Clint Eastwood film and the bad guys look like genuine western bad guys - rugged stubble and chewing tabacco! Awesome!
The sound track is as expected - a piano playing saloon songs plays annoyingly in the background but the actual sound effects of the guns firing and opponents cussing is very realistic. Although I found the piano annoying it was very easy to lower the ambient noise volume. The gameplay to RDR is OK - It will neither have you sat in fromt of the X-Box for hours but you will be strangely drawn back to play it time and time again. There are plenty of levels to complete - that involve a considerable amount of thought but it was just lacking that edge that would have made it a western version of GTA. Instead the story and levels move along at more of a pedestrian pace and some of the levels seem familiar after a while with the same opponents in the same spot in different levels.
Overall for the price I'm not disappointed - I've had the game for 12 months and still haven't managed to complete it and yes I do still go back to have a crack at the game. It has its flaws but it is worth buying if just for the cartoon intro's and the fact that it is an adventure/beat em up/first person shoot em up.
