If you like the sound of detonating tons of explosives and tearing appart buildings this game is sooo for you! This game being the third in its series is far superior and different to the first which i believe was released in 2001?! For example Guerrilla is now a third person shooter rather than a first person as in the first game release. In this edition you also can't tunnel through the ground but you can basically destroy anything on the surface (Mars). Mars is now under the control of the violent Earth Defense Force. Your role is to play a regular guy who happens to be looking for work on Mars when he soon gets caught up with the Red Faction who are attempting to take control from the EDF. Your player's (Mason) mission is to free six zones on Mars which sounds pretty straight forward! But each zone has an array of missions and its own story. To take control of the zones you must blow up certain buildings, recovering Mars and lessening the EDF control. You will have companions in most fights and you will also get the chance to upgrade weapons and tools. You will also pick up various vehicles on your missions, these vahicles as well as the weapons can destroy just about anything. What i found rather interesting about this edition is the amount of ways you can destroy a building also adding to the entertainment factor. A minor point though is that after a while of simply crashing down buildings concentration and attention does start to fade as the gameplay becomes repetative. But character plots and the story line does vary and will keep some concentration. The game will however provide hours of playtime as there are so many chllenging goals to achieve, all of which offer a variety of rewards that will better the gameplay and player skills. other than building destruction you will also have hostage rescue missions and you will be expected to wipe out a set amount of enemies, mostly hoping you dont run out of weapons before them as well as ensuring you stay alive in the timescale.
The graphics are good but there is no real waw factor to the designs. The game is good but not as developed as others in its genre. There are no remarkable sights but in this game i dont feel there is need, thus limiting the variation in graphics however. At times the game can get boring with not much in the surroundings and its repetitiveness but when your on to a good mission the game is really at its peak. You will find that most attacks are random and ugly so you will not have time for much tactics, just destroy whatever you can when you can! This feel of a free-for-all is strongly displayed in the online gaming. Multiplayer mode will offer you more power and is more atmospheric providing some interesting play.
Overall this game is great for anyone looking for distruction and constant battle. But the plot is weak so you will not be fully involved, not good for anyone wishing to get into the game fully. If you are playing single player this game can be quite lengthy. Multiplayer function off line is quite poor as its basicaly a round of pass the controller and everyone gets a turn to destroy something within a time limit! A 6 out of 10!
