property destruction on the side, Red Faction II is the game for you. Set a few years after the first game but curiously failing to feature Parker, the hero from the original, Red Faction II casts you as Alias, a nanotech-enhanced soldier out to bring down the Soviet-style Commonwealth that has decided to blight the land in the way that evil dictatorships always seem to in video games. The primary gimmick of the Red Faction games is the Geo-Mod (geometry modification) graphics engine, which allows you to destroy almost any wall, ceiling and floor in order to proceed or simply to just have a bit of a laugh. The biggest problem with the first game was its terrible loading times, which really interrupted the flow of the game, but that's been sorted out for this sequel, which also includes improvements to the previously Spartan multi-player modes. As you'd expect, there are also lots of new vehicles to drive--including a very natty robotic power suit--plus tons more weapons and even a new Halo-style shield system. Admittedly none of this is terribly original, and the frame rate can stutter on occasion, but it's still lots of fun for red-blooded men and women. --David Jenkins

Wolfenstein 3-D. Huge advances in 3-D graphics, sound, and processor speed, as well as the addition of network multiplayer gameplay have favoured the genre, and now, Red Faction's "Geo Mod" technology promises to take the first-person shooter to new heights. Geo Mod, which is short for "geometry modification," allows formerly permanent elements of a game's background to change in real-time. For example, if a player were to shoot a rocket at a stone wall, the wall could crumble or have a hole blown clean through. The best that previous games could do is to change the texture of the wall and leave it looking charred. While most gamers would applaud any advance in realistic graphics, Geo Mod looks to also influence the way first-person shooters are played. If the world of the first-person shooter can be altered, the game makers point out, then the world itself becomes a weapon at your disposal. More than just shooting opponents through walls, players should be able to cause a ceiling to collapse on an opponent. With the right tools, players will be able to destroy bunkers, block escape routes, and otherwise flush players out of their well-defended positions. Obviously, it's Geo Mod that has gamers so excited for this game, so other game components might be easy to overlook in the excitement. Red Faction's story is set on a Martian mining colony, where workers, buffeted by abusive guards and a deadly plague, revolt. In the single-player game, you'll run around the tunnels of Mars in a first person view and use 15 weapons to destructively deform the environment as well as your foes. You can also hijack land, sea, and air vehicles to aid your revolt. --Porter B. Hall

Advantages: A good size single player mission, some fun to be had in multiplayer Disadvantages: Some lacklustre weaponry, load times, Geo-Mod limited
...have a multiplayer mode which, though not as comprehensive as those of some of the competition, allows two players and a handful of bots to battle it out amongst each other. Red Faction is a rather average FPS, but I found it to be about worth finishing for the finale. ...

Advantages: Good storyline, GeoMod Disadvantages: Dodgy AI at times
...and truly part of the Red Faction, created by Eos. She relies on you to perform certain tasks and hopefully you’re her hope on the inside to help the other miners to take down Ultor’s guards.
Can you complete your tasks, stop the deadly virus affecting the miners and get out alive? You’re going to have to use every ounce of sense, every weapon and any vehicle to get the job done and I think you’re going to like being Parker….. ... ...pointed at what was possible. Red Faction isn’t going to leave you dazzled but the overall presentation is actually very impressive. If you’ve seen Half Life (sorry about the constant comparison!) running on a Voodoo 3 then you’re just about there. The underground environment is quite simple in its appearance in general but the various lighting effects from weapon fire and lights are really very impressive indeed. Any walls etc ...

Advantages: Fantastically playable, Superb control system, Slick graphics and Exciting Gameplay Disadvantages: Single Player campaign could be longer
...is over. The highly anticipated Red Faction from Volition blasts onto the PlayStation2. And has it been worth the wait? In short, yes. First person shooters are something of a dark horse on consoles. Traditional PC gamers still stick to their guns, saying that the FPS genre will never be successful on the console gaming platform. The capabilities of the hardware, the absence of a keyboard and mouse, and lack of successful on-line play capability ... ...FPS are the controls, and Red Faction?s set a new standard. Completely customisable, they offer possibly the best overall control system for a console FPS yet, without the need for a keyboard and mouse. Two words describing this game are perhaps the most critical yet- GEO MOD. This new technology, designed by Volition, re defines the First Person Shooter. A completely new structure to level design means that levels can be changed during the course ...

...of these rebels - the Red Faction. Your mission is to kill any enemies that get in your way, bring down some of the fascist movement's key leaders, destroy their security systems, communications and power supplies and get out of there before it's too late. Thankfully, there are a few people who help you along the way. Hendrix, your comms man, gives you constant reassurance from his warm and safe office somewhere in Ultor's complex. You are also joined ... ...and the rest of the Red Faction. It's high-octane stuff and hard to put down as you are thrown into each and every mission with urgency and huge amounts of visual and audio interaction.
The interactive environment that the game is set in holds lots of things for you to use to aid your mission, and a few that are simply just fun to play with. First up are the security camera control panels. You can access any of them to view rooms that you may not ...

Advantages: Looks great and plays really well Disadvantages: Why the mid-level loads ? Why ?
Red Faction is a first person shooting game for Playstation 2 in the style of the excellent Half-Life on PC. If you don’t know what I mean by first person shooter, it is simply a game viewed through the eyes of the hero rather than the usual behind him or side on views.
Red Faction is set way into the future, on Mars. The planet has been colonised by the Ultor corporation and turned into a large mining planet. The company shipped miners out there ... ...rebellious force known as the Red Faction has become known, and their leader Eos is trying to lead the miners to rebel against Ultor. One miner, Parker (you) finally snaps when he sees his friend killed by an Ultor security guard and so the trouble begins... You play the game as Parker, trying to escape the colony and bring down Ultor as you go, usual miner stuff then. On the way you have to get by the guards, security systems and try to find out ...
