Disadvantages Disadvantages Until you realise a stress-free Wii experience is more fun

INTRODUCTION FPS, huh? Yeah, they're three letters that probably wouldn't mean anything to me either unless I had a somewhat healthy interest in the video game industry. Those three letters happen to stand for 'first person shooter', and the chances are that you have played an FPS video game before in your lifetime. An example of such a game is 'Goldeneye 64', where you manuever yourself around situations from a first-person perspective, gun inhand of course. When the announcement was made of the Nintendo Wii there was a buzz around how its unique control system, the motion sensing Wiimote ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Short (12 hours), Not worth replaying, First few levels very boring and drab

Red Steel was one of 3 games I picked up on Wii Launch Day, December 8th, 2006. It had earned reviews from the press ranging from average to pretty decent, but I was not deterred. I'd been interested in this game since screenshots first emerged months before it's release, and I knew I had to get it. So, at midnight, when I went to pick up my Wii, there was my copy, waiting for me. Needless to say, I was still at it untill the sunlight, and school was out of the question! Red Steel is a First Person Shooter, and the best FPS on the Wii at the moment, if you ask me! Far Cry, is, well, shocking ... more

Advantages Advantages At times rather good | Controls work

Disadvantages Disadvantages At times rather bland | Sword play not as good as it could have been

Red Steel has had a lot to prove ever since it was announced. It was the first officially unveiled game for the Wii giving people a glimpse at what a game on the Wii could look like and whether it really was noticeably different to what the GameCube could handle. It also had the task to prove to the world that the Wii's control system could handle such a game which was demonstrated at E3 in 2006. The showing had teething problems but most people walked away fairly pleased. Since then Ubisoft have been keen to stress that Red Steel has been tweaked, modified to further improve the experience ... more

Advantages Advantages Good shooting mechanics, solid if dull gameplay.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor swordfighting, dated graphics, didn't live up to its potential.

I must admit that I much prefer reviewing video games that have been out for at least a few years, this is for two reasons. Firstly, I find that a new game tends to either thrill or disappoint; only when some time has passed do we view them a little more objectively. Secondly, they are far more interesting to discuss when taken with a little context. Considering a game's place in the overall scheme of things can change it completely, Super Mario 64 is now an awkward platformer in which it is impossible to run in a straight line but back in 1996 it was a revolution. Red Steel is not a ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor graphics, slightly glitchy, not suitable for young teens, rubbish multiplayer.

Red Steel was one of the first fighting Wii games I bought, mostly because it was based around swordplay and the Japanese culture. Plot You are Scott, fiancé of the beautiful Miyu, who is in turn, daughter of one of the Yakuza clan leaders, Sato. You were once just her bodyguard, and now you become her rescuer. You main enemy is Tokai, instigator of all the trouble and change in the Yakuza world in the game. Gameplay As you may have guessed. Your wiimote is your weapon, either as a gun or a sword, and works quite well as one. You travel through the levels, fighting off bad-guys and picking up ... more
