Sweet and mellow raging bull
Advantages: Compliments a summers barbeque or sunday roast Disadvantages: the morning after!
The Gran Sangre de Toro from Torres
What a superb wine. I have always been a fan of spanish wines, however my in laws are from Spain and always have a bottle or three in the cupboard!, I have learnt bad habits from them!
They (the in-laws and the spanish in my experience) quaff Torres like its water, the heady , rich and versatile grapes that are used to create this fine wine and enjoyed at any time of the day!(Usually with a steak)
In one respect ... ...but the Gran Sangre will set you back between £7- £8.50 in British pounds, mine cost £7.39. The standard version, Sangre de Toro is also available for about $4.50 in most good wine merchants. This is a lovely wine too, but lacks the kick of the Gran Sangre!
Essentially then, you are quaffing the Great Blood of the Bull instead of just the Blood of the Bull.Charming!
You can't miss the bottle, it has TORRES in capitals across the gold coloured label ...

My Royal Hat - The Three Towers. It’s Not A Cigar
Advantages: An uncompromising full bodied, full flavoured Spanish red wine. Right for drinking now; right for saving for later. Sheraton Hotels’ choice for “house red” Disadvantages: You might have to look carefully for it
...THE VINTNER
Miguel Torres is the fourth generation of Torres family wine growers. The business is one of the largest of the wine producers of the Catalonia region of Spain. The vineyards are to be found in the hilly Penedès district on the banks of the River Foix near the town of Vilafranca del Penedès on the N340.
Their range of wines is vast (20 from Catalonia alone), having taken over some neighbouring vineyards and invested in California and ... ...with a cork bearing the Torres name and crest. It is sealed with a maroon metal capsule over which is stuck a small label bearing an authenticity mark and a batch number. The main label is cream with gold banners again bearing the Torres crest: a shield with three towers surrounded by three crowns and two branches. Below is the year of foundation – 1870. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and Tempranillo (15%). It is fermented to 13.5% ...

Drink it by the box!
Advantages: Consistently good quality wine, excellent value Disadvantages: Price can vary between retailers, beware.
I "discovered" Stowells wines when they offered them at my local Somerfield 3 bottles for £10. I chose 2 white (for the wife!) and a bottle of red for me which happened to be Tempranillo. I went back a bought a futher 3 bottles of just Tempranillo once I had finished the first bottle.
Since then, it has become my favourite wine, on my christmas and birthday lists, and i have even bought a few of the 3 litre boxes of the wine (which never seem to ... ...being my favourite? It is a consistently mellow fruity wine, easy to drink on its own or with food. It is particularly nice with cheese, but you really dont need an excuse to crack open a bottle of this beauty. For the price (providing you shop around) it is an excellent all - rounder and once that should always have a place in your wine rack. ...

You don't even get what you pay for.
Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: Virtually undrinkable
...my delight when I found Hidden Vineyards British wines on Asda's bottom shelf at less than £2 a bottle.
"Got to give it a try" I thought, so I grabbed two white and two red.
Pouring myself a glass of red (room temperature of course), I savoured the rich blackcurrant nose of this curiously bright red wine and alas! The flavour made me wince. The taste was almost indistinguishable from a well known blackcurrant cordial and there was an overwhelming ... ...judgement and knowing that some of the bottom end reds can sometimes be made acceptable by chilling, I popped a bottle in the fridge and tried it the next day.
The chilling did not improve it one iota.
70 cl of the first bottle had been pored down the sink and another 70cl followed. NOT an operation that I undertake lightly, in fact it is MANY years since I have done that. ...

Wine appreciation for beginners...
Advantages: Great tasting, good value wine Disadvantages: Can be hard to get hold of
...itself.
It is called Fortius Navarra Crianza 1999. Fortius - brand name
Navarra - the region
Crianza - meaning aged in an oak cask before bottling
1999 - the vintage of the grapes. 1999 is classified as very good on a scale of poor to excellent.
It comes in a 75cl dark green bottle with a classy looking gold on black label. It is 12.5% alcohol and was made with a blend of 75% Tempranillo grapes and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. The term “Tempranillo” ... ...to the fact that this grape ripens sooner than the other traditional variaties in Spain (2 weeks earlier than Garnacha, for example). It is a thick-skinned black grape used to make full-bodied deep coloured red wines. Tempranillo responds very well to maturing in oak, producing smooth, elegant wines capable of long aging. Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are a smaller variety. Yield-wise, the grapes also give out little juice. However it is this “poor” ...
