Well, fancy that! There’s a category about redirecting your mail! As you know I am having first hand experience of changing my address at the moment so who would be better qualified than me to tell you about the service?
I have moved house a couple of times before, both many years ago, and had the mail redirected with a minimum of fuss and little in the way of checks on identity so I was quite unprepared for the efficiency of the new system, but quite impressed nonetheless.
We heard on Tuesday 2nd July that we could definitely move on Tuesday 9th July and, since it says on the form from the Post Office that they need ‘at least five working days’ to set up the redirection that was fine. More about that later!
To begin with you need to go to your Post Office and request the relevant form to fill in. This consists of two sides of A4 and the first thing to fill in is your current address, new address and date of moving together with a telephone contact number.
Next you must list the names of all the people for whom the post is to be redirected between these two addresses and include any abbreviations of names too. For example my name is Susan but I am often known as Sue.
You then chose whether to have your mail redirected for one, three, six or twelve months. The cost obviously varies with the length of time but I’ll come on to that later.
Then for the proof of identity! You can apply by post sending off the various forms of identification required, but I am always a bit wary of sending passports etc., through the post so I went into my Post Office to process my application.
The Cashier at the Post office will need to verify two forms of identification for each different surname for whom the post is being redirected. So, in our case, Dave had to provide two and I had to provide another two.
There are two lists on the request form and you need to pick one form of identification from each list.
List A consists of: Payment by cheque or your chequebook Pension or benefit book (providing the Post Office you are using is the one named in the book) Cheque guarantee, debit or credit card Bank or building society passbook Passport National Savings book Store Charge card
List B consists of: Two different utility bills (not a mobile phone bill or store charge card bill) Driving licence (photo licences must be accompanied by form D740) Council tax payment book Recent bank or building society statement Council rent book Credit card statement
The statements and/or bills must be no more than six months old.
If all the applicants on the list share the same surname then only proof of identity of the person making the application will be needed.
As I said earlier, when I redirected mail some years ago there was none of this proof of identity information, but I certainly think it’s an improvement in the system. Now you have to prove that you are the person who is entitled to receive the mail that you are asking to be redirected.
Now for the cost – this is where it starts to get expensive if you have different surnames, because the cost is per surname, not per address.
For one month is costs £6.30, three months costs £13.65, six months costs £21.00 and twelve months costs £31.50. Therefore you can see that for Dave and I the cost of redirection was £63 as we do not share a surname, but for mom and dad it was only £31.50 and we added my sister’s name and mine to their form as we occasionally have mail delivered to our childhood home. We all still share the same surname so the whole lot cost just £31.50.
You can also have your mail redirected abroad, which costs £12.50 for one month, £27.30 for three, £42.00 for six and £63 for twelve months, and again it is charged per surname.
Once the application has been handed in to your Post Office and the cashier has checked your identification and returned it to you all you have to do is sit back and wait for your redirected mail.
There is one snag though – although the form says that it takes five working days to set up, when we telephoned to enquire where our first two days mail had gone we were told that it actually takes seven working days so be warned about that!
Obviously it also means that your mail is a day later than it would otherwise have been since it has to go to the Post Office serving the old address first in order to be redirected, by the addition of a sticker bearing your new address.
After the initial hiccup we have been very impressed by the service and it gives us the peace of mind that, if we have forgotten to inform someone of our new address we will still receive the mail.
Of course it also means that when I am sending off for special offers that are ‘one per person’ I can send one to my new address and one to my old one knowing that it will be redirected! It will help pay for the redirection costs anyway!
And I have just received another surprise as I have logged in to post this opinion – it’s a paying category! I didn’t expect that!
