My name is Beckie and I recently spent £11 on hair conditioner.
Now that I have got that confession out of the way I can get on with the review. I know how the good people of Ciao love a hair conditioner review, so I am about to wow you with the tale of how I spent £11 of my very own money on a 250ml bottle, and did not end up feeling ripped off.
Last time I went to the hairdressers, Steve, my long suffering stylist, took a section of my hair in his hands and looked at me as though Worzel Gummidge would have been proud to call me a relation. The "What on earth have you been putting on your hair?" questions quickly followed. Steve loves to mock my affliction for putting all types of gloop onto my hair to make it look shiny, manageable or soft. The conversation continued with military type orders to sort it out and use a proper hair care product.
So, I ended up waltzing out of the hairdressers minus an extra £11 and with a smallish bottle of conditioner in a really pretty bag. I have to admit to laughing at the name of the conditioner, for I am neither blonde nor glam, but more about that later.
☆ The Product ☆ Redken produce a range of products that are sold through hair saloons and certain approved stockists. Blonde Glam conditioner is an everyday conditioner that does not need to be left in the hair, but does claim to "help activate brilliance, clarify colour and reinforce strength for multi-tonal blondes".
☆ My Hair ☆ As a child my hair was naturally very blonde. As I have aged it has gone darker, and now is mousy brown. There are some natural blonde highlights in my hair, and sometimes there are some not so natural blonde highlights too! I suppose that you could call my hair "normal" as it is neither dry nor is it greasy. It is occasionally coloured, and is frequently straightened, curled, blasted with my hairdryer and generally treated badly. As a result of years worth of neglecting my hair it is often in poor condition and gets quite knotted. Well that sounds attractive! So the claim that this product "detangles, helps strengthen and revives blondes for a bright, sparkling, shiny finish" sounded ideal for me.
☆ Packaging ☆ The sturdy plastic bottle is a golden blonde colour, with white writing on. It has a black plastic flip top lid, which flips up and down easily, and more importantly does not leak. I like the packaging. The bottle has ridges down the side, making it easy to hold when wet. The flip top lid has a small hole, which limits the amount of product that you can squirt out. The lid is flat, which means that you can turn the bottle upside down when you are getting near to the end of the conditioner, ensuring that you get every last drop out of the bottle, which (lets face it) you are going to do when you pay so much money for the product.
☆ The Blonde Glam Conditioner Experience ☆ Steve the stylist made me laugh when he was describing how to use this product. His words were "You need between a 5p and 10p sized blob of conditioner. That is pence not pounds Beckie, are you listening?" Obviously he has sussed my more is more approach to hair care products. So after washing my hair I carefully applied a small blob of Blonde Glam, thinking that there was no way ever that my longer than shoulder length hair would look any better with just that amount of product. However, I was wrong! Seriously it is the tiniest blob of conditioner that is required.
I wash my hair in the shower, so after washing with shampoo I go straight onto the conditioner. I work the conditioner through with my fingers, concentrating on the ends of the hair. The conditioner then needs rinsing off properly, this is not a leave in conditioner, and if you do accidentally leave it in (which I might have done once) then your hair ends up with a slightly greasy shine to it. The product is really thick, and you get the feeling that it does not contain as much water as some cheaper products. The conditioner has a slight glittery sheen to it, and is a creamy white colour.
☆ Ingredients ☆ I am not going to list all the ingredients here, but I will point out some of the key ones. This product contains grapefruit extract, which gives it the great smell, and apparently is the key ingredient in improving blonde clarity. It also contains a UV filter which is useful for protecting hair from the suns rays.
☆ The Smell ☆ This conditioner has a really fresh citrus smell which comes from the grapefruit extract. It smells very natural, and is not overpowering but does last even after rinsing the product out.
☆ Results and My Opinion ☆ Well, I am still not truly blonde, and still not glam BUT my hair smells yummy, and you could (if you so wished) run your fingers through my hair without fear of scalping me as your fingers get stuck in the knots.
I am really impressed with the quality of this product. Some conditioners leave a certain amount of residue on your hair, which builds up and leaves you feeling like your hair is greasy. Redken Blonde Glam doesn't leave this build up. My hair is definitely shinier, and there is a noticeable improvement in the tangle status. Furthermore I believe the claim that this conditioner has improved the clarity of my hair colour and has allowed the natural highlights to shine out.
This is not a cheap conditioner, but it has lasted and lasted. The thickness of the product and the small amount that you need to use ensures that it lasts much longer than some other conditioners. Furthermore if it can make a difference on my hair it really has been put to the test!
The only thing that I was at all concerned about with this product is the lack of a not tested on animals claim. I hadn't thought about this until writing the review, but having searched the Redken website I can see no claim about animal testing there either. I will ask my hairdresser next time I brave my way through his doors!
