For some adverts is a good reason to quickly put on the kettle and make a quick cup of tea or going for a quick leak before resuming back to their normal seating position in front of the TV. I on the other hand actually enjoy adverts (call me sad). Today most adverts are well thought out and very entertaining. Vast amounts of money are invested in order to promote what ever they are trying to sell – and most are portrayed with style and eye catching techniques.
A prime example is the latest Reebok advert – When you first see this advert there is no indication that it is about Reebok trainers until the very end. This original and clever advert quickly induces its target audience into excitement and interest. The setting takes place in a small room – a young man seated on a sofa watching the TV. The young man then decides to go for his sports bag and walks towards the door.
But he soon finds out that he cannot leave the room without trying to get passed this huge sofa. The sofa comes alive and prevents him from leaving the room. The only way of getting out is to wrestle with this mean living sofa. It is hilarious as this monster looking piece of furniture wraps all around him and engulfs his whole body. Each has a different objective – the man trying to escape and leave the room whilst the sofa is preventing him from leaving.
As he struggles to detach himself and head for the door – he manages to squirm out whilst crawling on the floor – this section of the advert is brilliant because you get impression the young man has managed to escape. Think again - now the sofa really gets mad and steps on the mans trousers as he crawls towards the door. Pulling him back into the flat but he manages to wriggle out of his trousers and finds himself being chased around the room in his briefs. At this point I’m in stitches because for starters it looks so odd a living sofa chasing this scared helpless man around the room.
Compared to the last Reebok advert “your bellies gonna getcha” – “Escape the sofa” is better in every way. Although the concept is the same where by in the old advert the man is being haunted, chased and stalked by this big beer belly and in this latest Reebok ad the man is being attacked and chased by this hungry, mean living sofa. Still there is no comparison – “Escape the sofa” is a great advertising idea – keeping the viewer focused and drawn in until the very end. It is at the end that all is revealed – the product being promoted and whether the man manages to escape the sofa. By suppressing this information from the viewers until the end it is a very clever way of getting its target audience attention. You cannot help but be glued until you see the final outcome.
Still being chased around his flat he manages to head for the door but accidentally falls down the stairs – a last desperate attack on the man as the sofa senses he is near to escaping. The sofa pushes itself through the frame doorway and plunges towards the helpless man as he lies at the foot of the door. Again a brilliant scene – a bit like a horror movie really. Its like the sofa is possessed and will stop at nothing – the mans face expressions of fear and shock make it even more convincing. And to think this is a Reebok advert. As the sofa throws itself and slides down the sidewalls heading straight for the man you think for a moment he is doomed. The man desperately goes for the door handle and quickly ducks out of the way. This bulk of a sofa can go no further as it gets stuck on the doorway. The relieved man just picks up his sports bag and walks of. The advert finishes with the logo “escape your sofa”. – Reebok.
The advertisement featured is to promote Reebok trainers – foremost is the layout and carefully chosen setting. A simple sofa and a man in this bare room. Yet the advertising department of Reebok has managed to put their message across really well. The message that they are trying to convey is to get your Reebok’s on and do some exercise or keep fit instead of being slumped on your sofa. The main caption “escape your sofa” informs the viewers to get up and go – In other words the caption invites the viewers to go and buy Reebok trainers and head for the gym. That is my interpretation although I may be wrong.
Advantages: Easy to understand humour BUT.... Disadvantages: ....the punchlines aren’t that funny (or too memorable either).
...the series ‘Belly’ and ‘Trouble’. Reebok have hinged their hopes on high-concept but low-minded humour to try and sell their trainers.
The first has a man running down a street BUT is soon revealed to be pursued by a menacingly large ‘beer belly’ who is determined to catch up with him. We see him trying to escape the ‘belly’ as we see him jump over a fence in an alleyway BUT the ‘belly’ manages to get over it by simply ... ...a shopping mall with the ‘belly’ in hot pursuit (in the background the ‘belly’ eyes him and is soon lodged into an elevator with two unfortunate passengers as
it lets out an audible ‘fart’). Soon though, the man escapes into what is seemingly a car-park and the man makes his way onto the roof and gets to a ledge but with nowhere to go and is soon ‘trapped’ as the ‘belly’ pursues him on a motorbike (with a sidecar for ...

Advantages: Cool music, funny, good fx Disadvantages: too obscure to sell shoes
If you ever saw Woody Allen being chased by a giant inflatable breast then you have a chance of being prepared for Reebok’s “Your bellys gonna getcha” advert. If not it’s one of the most obscure advertising ideas I’ve ever seen.
To the strains of a screaming soundtrack, a man is chased through streets, shopping malls and even into a lift by a giant beer belly, complete with fluff and spiders legs. Eventually the man thinks he has shaken his gastric ... ...only to crash into a river.
Now granted the man is running and I’m sure his Reeboks are very comfortable but is it going to persuade me to buy a pair. It’s only likely to spill the carefully positioned beer can off your average Yuletide beer-gut.
It’s funny, it’s gross but will it sell shoes, it took me a few watches before I even knew it was for Reebok. ...

...write an opinion for the Reebok advert, you know the one with the hideous belly chasing a man through the streets and shopping centres. What an absolutely awful TV ad. The first time I watched it, it made me feel sick, and I probably would have been if it hadn’t have been for the song that accompanies the ad, what on earth is that? Now I know that I’m getting on a bit but that music (If you can call it that) is dreadful!
What were Reebok ... ...and healthy but there are far better ways of getting the point across it I’m sure. In short, this ad is terrible and ok it may be aimed at younger people but still it doesn’t make good TV. Maybe I’m too old for that sort of thing, the product is aimed at people a third my age so maybe that why I don’t get it. ...

...Escape your Settee.
The actor seems quite good at the part, and when the sofa begins to pull him across the floor back into the flat, only for him to wriggle out of his pants, is hilarious. Wouldn't make me go out and buy Reebok trainers though. ...
