Every teacher should have one

Advantages: Easy to understand and deliver. FUN
Disadvantages: none - it's great!

An EXCELLENT "couldn't live without it" resource. Once in a while a teaching resource comes along that it so amazingly indispensible that you just have to tell the world about it. This book is one of them. I bought this to use with a mixed age class of Y5 and Y6 pupils at the beginning of the academic year 2007-2008. Admittedly, i didn't know exactly what i was buying (it was an Amazon - buy these two for £X deal), however given the author i suspected ...
...wrong. It wasn't just quite useful - it was amazing! The activities range from modern twists on old-fashioned consequences through to film based drama activities. It even has suggested activities for use when working on poetry. Each activity is clearly explained, easy to deliver and most importantly fun and engaging. Most activites are short and can easily fit into a morning registration period. I put some on the board as an early morning starter ...

Beneficial buy to boost your engligh grade.

Advantages: The poems are annotaed clearly, and concise. It gives model answers to typical exam questions.
Disadvantages: The book does not go into enough depth for revison.

...for Paper 2 of the GCSE English exam and is aimed at the AQA A specification. I have used this book for my revision and found it to be quite helpful. It includes all of the key poems needed and annotates around the poems significant points which are helpful to include in the English exam. It also includes how to write an essay, which is very helpful. I often write down lots of points for an essay and then I am unsure as to how to start it, so I found ...
...for someone taking their English GCSE it is helpful to start your revision. Although I would make sure you don’t just rely on this book for your revision and that you make sure you use other sources to make your notes more in-depth which in turn will help boost your grade. For all the students taking the GCSE English exam this year, Good luck! ...

A Pocket Gem

Advantages: Sturdy quality; nice little touches like the pocket at the back; Nostaglic Romanticism
Disadvantages: None

Moleskine proudly boasts that it was the notebook of choice for a number of influential thinkers, artists and writers, ranging from Van Gogh to Hemingway, via Matisse and Chatwin. A lofty pedigree indeed, so what made these great minds choose such an unassuming little black book, and why should you choose one today? I actually started with Moleskines when I received one of their diaries for Christmas, and finding it a handy little thing decided ...
...of websites, one of which is an online monthly magazine, and find the need to jot down thoughts, and start writing article introductions, straight away lest I forget what was going through my head. At a diminutive 9x14cm this notebook easily slips inside a coat pocket, with the 192 lined pages proving enough to get a huge amount of thought onto the written page. The book itself is virtually bombproof - I carry it every single day in a bag where ...

Secrets of the Hidden City - The London Encyclopedia

Advantages: The closest you can get to time travel
Disadvantages: A daunting 1060 pages

It is one of the ironies of life that most of us live in cities, sometimes even houses, that were named, planned and designed by the long-dead. Those of us who live in or near London know the meaning of “creaking Victorian infrastructure” better than most, as we use a tube network, roads and water systems designed for a completely different world. The London Encyclopedia is a mammoth reference work of 1060 pages and shows us that there is a deep ...
...in London. Most of the bloody revolutions, scandals and turmoil in England’s eventful history made their way through the capital. Even the most innocuous locations can yield dark secrets. It is also a fascinating guide to the lost city of London, the places that have simply been demolished, destroyed or vanished. From the Gothic splendour of Old St. Paul’s Cathedral (burned down 1666), to the vast glass emporium of Crystal Palace (burned down 30 ...

Bible of English language teachers

Advantages: packed with information on almost any possible TEFL scenario
Disadvantages: not so great if you're teaching on a 1:1 basis

Learning Teaching was one of two set books when I began on my CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) course back in 2007. The other set text was Michael Swann's Practical English Usage. I ordered my copy of Learning Teaching from Amazon and can't now remember the exact price that I paid, although I know that it was notably below the RRP of £19.50. Even at full price, this book is very reasonable as it is very useful and more importantly ...
...pay separately for this. Learning Teaching is written by Jim Scrivener and published by Macmillan Books for Teachers. My copy is the second edition, published in 2005, the first edition was published (according to my book) in 1994. Jim Scrivener is an English language teacher. He is also a tutor both on initial training, Diploma and specialist teacher development programmes. He has worked in several countries, which means that he has a good range ...
