Bible of English language teachers

Advantages: packed with information on almost any possible TEFL scenario
Disadvantages: not so great if you're teaching on a 1:1 basis

Learning Teaching was one of two set books when I began on my CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) course back in 2007. The other set text was Michael Swann's Practical English Usage. I ordered my copy of Learning Teaching from Amazon and can't now remember the exact price that I paid, although I know that it was notably below the RRP of £19.50. Even at full price, this book is very reasonable as it is very useful and more importantly ...
...pay separately for this. Learning Teaching is written by Jim Scrivener and published by Macmillan Books for Teachers. My copy is the second edition, published in 2005, the first edition was published (according to my book) in 1994. Jim Scrivener is an English language teacher. He is also a tutor both on initial training, Diploma and specialist teacher development programmes. He has worked in several countries, which means that he has a good range ...

A Little Toe By Toe Help For Dyslexia........

Advantages: Amazing results
Disadvantages: Can be monotonous

...with our own copy of Toe by Toe: A Highly Structured Multi-Sensory Reading Manual for Teachers and Parents. A Bit About The Book First published in 1993 by Keda and Harry Cowling this book took 25 years of hard work and research to create. It was very cleverly named Toe by Toe so that the child or indeed adult using this book understands that they will learn taking very tiny steps, one toe at a time. It uses very unique techniques of teaching ...
...school plus there are further Toe by Toe exercises for spelling to do later once we have completed the reading ones. I can only find praise for this teaching aid having had no problems at all with it. It is very well laid out and very easy for the coach to understand. Although some of the exercises can be quite monotonous, some are fun too and for 10 - 20 minutes a day I don't think it is too much to ask. I am sorry for the length of this review ...

Experience speaking French

Advantages: Authentic recordings, good vocabulary
Disadvantages: Grammar not detailed enough

...tuition course in French, The French Experience 1 is worth considering. Writing and grammar are not over-emphasised, but if you wish to speak, understand and read texts, there is a wealth of material here. Each unit focuses on a particular topic such as health, travel, food and drink, professions, holidays and so on, providing useful vocabulary for tourists as well as residents. The CDs contain authentic dialogues and interviews recorded in France; ...
...of the letters of the French alphabet, asking for things in a very simple way, and numbers from one to twenty. I find the French alphabet is presented in a particularly useful way: rather than putting the letters in order, they are grouped according to similar sounds; thus B, C, D, G, P, T, V and W are in the same group (they all rhyme). Unit 1 - Introductions (Présentations) You learn how to say what your name is, how old you are, what your job ...

...risen to become one of the world's leading authorities on language. A former professor of Linguistics at the University of Reading, he has written and edited a number of language-related books, including "The English Language", "English as a Global Language" and "Discover Grammar". Do you really know how to read...

Advantages: A true classic
Disadvantages: Content could be broadened

...my life, thinking I knew how to read a book. I’d advanced through elementary school and prep, into college and finally to graduate school when I discovered, to my horror, that I in fact did not know how to read! Perhaps that helps to explain my affinity to literacy programmes, with whom I will begin working again come this Wednesday. But no, perhaps I overstate the situation. What I actually mean to say is that it was not until my graduate school ...
...Anyone who wishes to discover how much has been added can do so quickly by comparing the present Table of Contents with that of the original version.' The book itself is divided into four main sections with two sizeable appendices. ++The Dimensions of Reading++ In this section, the authors look as types of reading and reading levels. They look at basic goals for reading, and discuss different types of learning. While they do not get into the theoretical ...
