Notes From A Hard Shoulder

Advantages: easy to dip in and out of, will make you laugh.
Disadvantages: will make you want to retire to your shed and dismantle the lawnmower.

Fantastic collection of articles written by James may, especially enjoyed the one where he was a mechanic for the Audi BTCC Team for the weekend. This book is really easy to dip in and out of, as they are little shorts story's (Columns from his Papers and Magazines he's worked for over the years) Any fan of the Top Gear shows, even Oz Clarke and James May's big Wine adventure, will enjoy the wit and Humour of this fine gentleman. It is a brilliant ...
...this book is written just as you'd imagine the author would be standing behind you orating magnificantly. His wit and derision of Jeremy Clarkson is pleasantly reassuring, but his insight and calm of hand with his writing abilities makes this book a compelling must have. His experiences and previous emoplyment help mould this book. his article span roughly a decade and the vehicles and ideas are clear of the times from when he was writing. I cannot ...

A captivating read, and that's a fact.

Advantages: Hundreds of short, fascinating and easy to read facts. Very good value for money.
Disadvantages: Book could be a bit longer.

...the BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright of Steve Wright in the Afternoon. If you haven't heard his show before, he has a feature on it whereby he and his team read out several interesting and mind-boggling facts, known by them as 'factoids'. This book is a compilation of hundreds of those facts that range from celebrities to the animal kingdom, and from food to sport. As a lover of all things factual I came across this book in my local pound store (a lucky ...
...available for such a price, I couldn't turn it down, and bought it. On the bus home I found myself reading it, with a sense of amazement and disbelief the more I read it. For a book that is on the outset rather small (160 pages), it yields a certain longevity. I haven't even read it from cover to cover. It's the sort of book like a dictionary, an encyclopedia or the Yellow Pages. You never really read it properly, you just dip in to the bit you find ...

Delicious Recipes, easy to follow.

Advantages: Easy to follow. Beautiful pictures.
Disadvantages: Very similar to original. Some recipes have no pictues.

Delia's new Christmas cookbook contains many of the classic recipes from the original book as well as hundreds of new recipes. The book is clearly laid out and none of the recipes I have tried so far have been too complicated, although all have been delicious! In particular the Luxury Seafood Pie with Parmesan Crust is definately something that we will be having again. Follwing on from her 'Cheat' cookbook many of the recipes have short cuts such ...
...are optional and traditionalists are free to take the long way round. My main criticism would be that not every recipe had a corresponding picture. I find the pictures useful when choosing a recipe as well as when cooking to check if it looks like it is supposed to!! Those with the original cookbook should not expect an entirely new book but instead an update on an old classic. An essential for any cooks collection! ...

Mathematics for humour fanatics - who would've thought it?

Advantages: Adds humour to a subject usually devoid of it. Easy layout to understand. Short and concise.
Disadvantages: Easier to remember humourous parts that sometimes detracted from learning. Odd bits aren't funny.

...to find a copy of GCSE Mathematics The Revision Guide (Higher Level) in my stocking for Christmas. This tome was teaming with a plethora of puns and witty illustrations, that invigorated my senses, and filled me with the intrigue required to read on. Whilst this somewhat detracted at infrequent moments from the true purpose of improving my mathematical abilities, it nonetheless served its purpose of making remember key terms (and in particular Pythagoras ...
