Why is it some men go bald and others don’t? – That was the first question by boyfriend asked the trichologist – my boyfriend is 29 but has all the signs of male pattern baldness, thinning hair on top and receding from the front. She responded by saying “the cause of it is normally hereditary, a family history of hair loss - Although there are treatments out there that can slow down the process and in some cases stimulate new hair growth”.

After spending hundreds of pounds on different types of special hair shampoos that showed no signs of improvement my boyfriend was willing to try something new. Since he started losing his hair he has lost all confidence in himself and so when he heard of Regaine (minoxidil for men) he went out and bought the treatment.

What is Regaine?
****************
Regaine is a hair loss treatment product that is medically proven to treat thinning hair and advancing baldness. The active ingredient in Regaine is minoxidil – Minoxidil is a drug, which stimulates hair growth.

Who can use Regaine?
********************
Men between the ages of 18 and 65 who show signs of male pattern baldness – such as thinning at the top of the scalp or receding from the back or front of the head (or both). My boyfriend has hair at the back of his head but is receding from the front and so the trichologist said that Regaine would be a suitable treatment seeing that his hair loss is still in the early stages.

Who should not use regaine?
***************************

* Women
  • Men under the age of 18 or over 65
  • People who have high blood pressure

Packaging
*********
Regaine is packaged in a large blue and black box, printed on the box is important literature giving a list of it contents and directions for use. – The box even contains a picture of a man showing three different stages of hair loss. It is clearly written and very easy to understand.

First time users have to buy a 3-month starter pack – This includes three 60ml bottles, each containing 5% solution of minoxidil. - One bottle for each month.

Directions: 1ml of minoxidil to be applied to the affected area of the scalp – twice daily.

Enclosed with these three 60ml minoxidil bottles are three different applicators.
  • Pump spray applicator
  • Extended spray-tip applicator
  • Rub on applicator

You use the applicator which suits you best – there are different stages of hair loss and each applicator has its function to suit what ever stage of hair loss your at. My boyfriend uses the pump spray applicator, he finds it to be the best applicator out of the three – with the spray applicator you spray six times in the bald and thinning area and then massage lightly into the scalp.

Do I need a prescription to buy Regaine?
**************************************
No prescription needed – You can buy Regaine over the counter from any chemist or pharmacist – I have bought it a few times for my boyfriend and now and again the person at the chemist might ask you if you have used Regaine before or if the person using it has high blood pressure.

Price
*******

Three month Regaine starter pack costs £65.00

An individual 60ml Regaine Bottle costs £30.00

A year supply of Regaine Minoxidil £260

Does it work ?
**************
Printed in bold black letters at the back of the box and I quote “Regaine will not work for everyone and it is not possible to predict individual responses” - also printed on the box “Hair growth should become noticeable after 2 months”. So did it work for my boyfriend? – Yes & No –My boyfriend has been using Regaine for ten months now and the results are gradually showing. Hair growth is a slow process and Regaine takes some time to work. The first initial months when using the product some of his hair fell out, this is due to old hairs being replaced by new growing hairs. Hair loss has stopped altogether now, his hair line is in the same place since he started using Regaine which means it hasn’t got any worse and the thinning hair on top has got thicker.

Is it worth it ?
*****************
For my boyfriend it is – since using Regaine he has more control over his hair loss, Regaine seems to have slowed down the process of male pattern baldness. The only problem with this treatment is that it is very expensive – If you stop using Regaine any regrown hair may disappear within 3 months, which basically means once you start you can’t stop. My boyfriend continues to use Regaine – he buys starter packs every 3 months at £65, it is the only medically proven product in the market to treat hair loss.

Bottom line
************
I used to think that hair loss/baldness was related to older men but after going to the trichologist with my boyfriend I saw a different picture. Apparently hair loss can start as early as 18 years of age and according to the Doctor we spoke to hair loss is on the increase with younger people. Why? Apart from being herederity she also said something about the food we eat and the air we breathe is not the same as it was 30 years ago. There is more food contamination and more pollution in the air than ever before - Whether that influences hair loss remains to be seen. My boyfriend is 29 and he started losing his hair at the age 23, although hair loss is a slow process it can still come as a shock when you realize you are losing your hair at such a young age.

Since using Regaine my boyfriend’s hair has improved – even though he has a short crop hairstyle you can still notice the difference when his hair grows, it is thicker on top and the hair loss has gone dormant. Nearly a year now and it hasn’t got any worse.

I've seen regain for women in the States, quite a few Chinese women were buying it in Las Vegas for themselves. My husband has very long hair and it is receding slightly at the front, I keep telling him it's because he sweeps it back into a ponytail. I can't imagine bald. Some men suit it though.
