For Christmas, my lovely sister and her family gave me a voucher for a pampering session at Fenwick's Regis Salon in the centre of Newcastle. Being the terribly dis-organised woman that I am it took me till the end of July this year to get around to booking myself in, but I have to tell you it was well worth the wait!
Firstly, let me tell you what the voucher was for:
Express Pedicure Express Manicure Hair Washed and Styled
Fenwick is a very famous Newcastle based department store, situated on Northumberland Street in the heart of the city centre. It's very easy to get to, with great transport links, and it's famous green logo can be spotted a mile away! There are lifts or escalators to all floors, and the salon is on the 3rd floor, next to a lovely terrace café/restaurant and the children's
toy section.
When I arrived I was greeted by very polite staff, who were dressed smartly in black. Despite me being 5 minutes late I was still accommodated and after a couple of minutes seated in the waiting area, which had lovely cubed leather seating, I was show through to a treatment room. The room was quite small, with a sink and bench at one end, a massage bed and 2 chairs. The walls of the room were sage green and complemented the fluffy, soft, crimson and white towels. The lights were dim and gentle and the air temperature was cool but not cold - it was a very hot day with temperatures soaring outside, so it was rather lovely to be cool! The floor was marble, and there was gentle pan-pipe music playing. It was all super-relaxing!
While the therapist got me my first complementary coffee of the morning I had a lovely foot soak in a warm, vibrating, scented footbath. Dreamy!!
The pedicure was my first treatment, and the only negative for me was that I had to put my feet up onto the therapists knees (I was sitting opposite her), which for me was a bit of a strain on the old leg muscles. However, I'm sure if I'd thought to ask, she would have let me lie on the bed. It was still incredibly relaxing, and while the therapist made gentle conversation, there wasn't the pressure to talk that you sometimes get in salons.
So my toenails were trimmed, filed, shaped and polished with a pretty baby-doll pink polish - all shiny and lovely! They looked as good as they felt!
When my toenails were dry, I was led from the treatment room, through the salon to where the manicure desks were situated. Again, my nails were filed and shaped, the cuticles were pushed down, and a conditioning treatment applied to them. Two coats of the same pink polish later, and my fingernails looked fabulous!
When the therapist had finished, I was shown back over to the waiting area and given another coffee while I waited for a hair stylist to arrive. This took about ten minutes, but during this time the manager came over to apologise for my delay and ask if there was anything she could get me - very polite and customer centric, I felt. The leather seating was very squashy and comfortable, and the coffee was great, so the time just flew!
My hair stylist arrived, and after a brief consultation about how I wanted my hair to look, she began by washing my hair, massaging my scalp (lovely!) and applying a conditioning treatment. After it had been dried, she applied some sort of serum (which smelt amazing!) and styled my hair into loose, feminine curls and waves - just exactly the way I had wanted! It looked and felt fabulous, very shiny and in good condition. I was very pleased with the results!!!
COSTS
The pampering I had was a gift, but even if I'd had to pay, it was well worth it: individual costs for the treatments I received would have been:
Express Pedicure: £16.75 Express Manicure: £12.75 Shampoo and Finish: £16.00
My overall opinion of this salon was a good one, and I've since been back to have my hair cut and styled and was over the moon with the results! For £32.00 I had my hair washed, cut and styled by a lovely lady called Maria, and I was ever so pleased with how I looked afterwards. She really listened to what I wanted, and checked lengths and things throughout. I had quite long hair, so it was a big change for me, and she made me feel totally relaxed and confident about the change. I still love my "new" hairdo weeks later and will certainly be going back before christmas to get a trim and pamper for the Festive period!
3RD FLOOR FENWICK 39, Northumberland Street Newcastle
Advantages: Good haircut. Appointment available at very short notice. Disadvantages: Bad atmosphere - unfriendly, not welcoming. Difficult to contact by phone.
