How we worship & how we are
Review of Liturgy and the Moral Self - E.Byron Anderson by
frkurt
Advantages: Good insights
Disadvantages: For a narrow audience
...character. Many parts of the liturgy are deeply reflective of who we are as individuals and communities. Are we musical? Are we movement-oriented or stillness-oriented? Are we contemplative? Anderson's essay in this, subtitled Hymning the Self Before God, discusses the importance of hymnody, the style of hymnody, the reasons why changing music or hymnals is so volatile: the music is an integral part of the soul. We sing because it expresses who we ... ...act of singing identifies us as singers. But in singing a hymn, we identify ourselves also with a particular text and tune, even in only momentarily.' Further essays on prayer also serve to illuminate this topic.
The final section discusses the connexion of words and music, including a discussion of liturgical music and and essay of reflections on writing, prayer and practice entitled Clunky Prayers and Christian Living. In this essay, Brian Wren ...

Good teaching and good learning
Review of Taught by God: Teaching and Spiritual Formation - E. Byron Anderson, Karen-Marie Yust by
frkurt
Advantages: Insightful
Disadvantages: -
...several in history who were taught by God rather than the academy, formal church institution, or other such recognisable courses of learning. This can be dangerous, taken in isolation, for it can be used in current times to justify the non-education, go-it-alone approach. However, the rest of the book does an excellent job at working against such notions, while upholding the validity of that kind of learning that comes from God. The fifth-century ... ...imagination or creativity, even when such may have validity as divinely inspired. Numerous examples show the importance of community, for discernment and the cultivation of wisdom - even figures such as Anthony and the Desert Hermits (both fathers and mothers) do not retreat from community without taking their learning from the community. In one chapter they discuss Parker Palmer's reflection on understandings of knowledge. There is the learning ...

Darwin's Angel
Review of Darwin's Angel: An Angelic Riposte to "The God Delusion" - John Cornwell by
Petejel05
Advantages: Extremely well written, Counteracts Dawkins arguments concisely, Small book
Disadvantages: Some chapters extremely short, though this is not neceserilly a weakness.
The body of the text in this book talks about extremely complicated philosphical and theological concerning both the existence and nature of God that Richard Dawkins so casually and powerfully attempts to devalue. It is written to form the counter argument to Richard Dawkin's controversial book "The God Delusion" and does just that. Where some authors would be tempted to pile in every argument under the sun to do this, Cornwell is extremely particular, ... ...It is not written as an angry God attempting to shout down a non-believer either. In fact, the peace that is present in the volume of this book is extremely humbling and reminds Dawkins what the Christian doctrine of God and Angels are. Peace, Love, Goodwill. Not Anger, Hate, Suffering. ...

The Bible Code
Review of The Bible Code - Michael Drosnin by
davidabraham
Advantages: An iin-depth travel through the endless combinations coded in the Bible
Disadvantages: Take Your time to read it, it requires the reader's full attention
The truth remains unknown. while Life remains a mystery. The present is all we will know. I have reached this same conclusion after having read Bible Code. The point of the book is that, hidden within the words of the Hebrew Bible, there is a secret code that, when deciphered, gives us an interesting view of events we see now, mentioning them almost 3000 years before they actually happen. The subject captivated me when I first read the book. The ... ...interested when it comes to the unknown especially if it is something that's beyond our capability. The author seems to use this as the focus on his book. He claimed to tell the truth by simply stating that he is an investigator with no bias opinions. I don't know if this is the truth but it does sound too perfect. I've been taught however, to always give people the benefit of the doubt. However, when it comes to science and religion, I can see that ...
