Review of Psalms: Chalice Commentary for Today - Marti Steussy by frkurt

Advantages: A good, solid introduction
Disadvantages: -

True to the ecumenical nature of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), of which author Marti Steussy, this commentary on the Psalms will appeal to a broad range of readers. Part of the Chalice Press series 'Chalice Commentaries for Today', Steussy's text combines older scholarship with her own research and studies derived from years of teaching and preaching. Steussy writes from the Christian perspective, but avoids the sin of supersessionism ...
...a Christian lens). The Psalms have long been a very popular book among Christians. As Steussy points out, often one finds the New Testament and Psalms paired in book form, and liturgical forms for many denominations are often derived from, if not directly lifted out of, the Psalms. Despite this, the Psalms contain various pieces that are problematic to modern readers. Steussy is honest and direct in approaching these texts, not trying to reinterpret ... Read review

Intriguing
Review of David: Biblical Portraits of Power - Marti Steussy by frkurt

Advantages: Well written, good research, interesting ideas
Disadvantages: -

David is an enigmatic figure. He has stories attributed to him that are reminiscent of legendary figures from Greek mythology, yet has other stories that show him as a very flawed, very human figure. He seems loyal and disloyal, caring and selfish, naïve and manipulative - almost as if there were several personalities present. Yet through all of this complexity, the single figure of David is more prominent than almost any other human figure in the ...
...compared with 772 for Moses, the next most-cited person). Moses, too, is a flawed person, but the depth of detail of David makes him in many ways a more interesting figure; his close-ness yet distance to the Divine also makes him more like the others of us ordinary human beings. Steussy identifies four different narrative strands that give the portrait of David to us: The history from Genesis to Kings (in particular, the narrative in Samuel); the ... Read review

Darwin's Angel
Review of Darwin's Angel: An Angelic Riposte to "The God Delusion" - John Cornwell by Petejel05

Advantages: Extremely well written, Counteracts Dawkins arguments concisely, Small book
Disadvantages: Some chapters extremely short, though this is not neceserilly a weakness.

The body of the text in this book talks about extremely complicated philosphical and theological concerning both the existence and nature of God that Richard Dawkins so casually and powerfully attempts to devalue. It is written to form the counter argument to Richard Dawkin's controversial book "The God Delusion" and does just that. Where some authors would be tempted to pile in every argument under the sun to do this, Cornwell is extremely particular, ...
...It is not written as an angry God attempting to shout down a non-believer either. In fact, the peace that is present in the volume of this book is extremely humbling and reminds Dawkins what the Christian doctrine of God and Angels are. Peace, Love, Goodwill. Not Anger, Hate, Suffering. ... Read review

The Bible Code
Review of The Bible Code - Michael Drosnin by davidabraham

Advantages: An iin-depth travel through the endless combinations coded in the Bible
Disadvantages: Take Your time to read it, it requires the reader's full attention

The truth remains unknown. while Life remains a mystery. The present is all we will know. I have reached this same conclusion after having read Bible Code. The point of the book is that, hidden within the words of the Hebrew Bible, there is a secret code that, when deciphered, gives us an interesting view of events we see now, mentioning them almost 3000 years before they actually happen. The subject captivated me when I first read the book. The ...
...interested when it comes to the unknown especially if it is something that's beyond our capability. The author seems to use this as the focus on his book. He claimed to tell the truth by simply stating that he is an investigator with no bias opinions. I don't know if this is the truth but it does sound too perfect. I've been taught however, to always give people the benefit of the doubt. However, when it comes to science and religion, I can see that ... Read review
