The Queen of Storytellers is back - with a triumphant tale of one woman's struggle over adversity. In 1786 a fisherman's daughter from Cornwall called Mary Broad was sentenced to...
more...be hung for theft. But her sentence was commuted, and she was transported to Australia, one of the first convicts to arrive there. How Mary escaped the harsh existence of the colony and found true love, and how she was captured and taken back to London in chains, only to be released after a trial where she was defended by no less than James Boswell, is one of the most gripping and moving stories of human endeavour (based on an amazing true story) you will ever read.

My mum and I started reading Lesley Pearce's books about 5 years ago, and haven't missed one since! Although the books look a bit daunting (3 inch fat paper backs with tiny print and squillions of pages) they are so addictive, there are never enough pages to satisfy my need to find out every last detail about the main characters life.

I started Remember Me on a Wednesday morning on the train into work, and had finished it by Friday night. I was so addicted; I just couldn't put it down, and found myself sneaking off to the toilets at work just to read a couple more pages!

Remember me is a storey based in the 1700's, and follow's the life of a young girl called Mary Broad from Cornwall, who through misplaced friendships, finds herself involved in petty crimes in order to survive since leaving her parents home in search of adventure and independence.

Mary is of course soon arrested for her crimes, and after a short trial is sentenced to death by hanging. The death penalty is narrowly avoided and she is instead sent for transportation to a new land.

The storey tells of the horrors of the justice system in the 1700's, and graphically describes scenes and events, which are completely incomprehensible to someone brought up in this day and age. The treatment of the prisoners and the conditions in which they are kept is truly horrifying, and the tortures and humiliation that goes along with it are nothing less than sickening.

Although this may seem a morbid and depressing theme for what I would consider a girlie book, the sprit and courage of the novels main character, Mary, is simply inspiring. Despite the conditions in which she is forced to live, this storey tells of friendship, love courage and extraordinary will power to survive.

This storey begins when Mary is 19 years old, and after leaving her home in Fowey in Cornwall to head to Plymouth for a new life, she soon finds herself in trouble.

Mary's soon realises that if she is going to survive the tremendous torture and hardships being a prisoner entails, she is going to have to adopt certain tactics, which do not always go in line with her morals.

Mary's life is filled with death of people she loves, starvation, betrayal and abuse, and yet despite all of this she never looses sight of her goals.

I read this book through tears and gritted teeth, willing Mary to keep going.

Without giving the ending away, I will say that I found it a bit disappointing, but then I read on and found out why. This storey is actually based upon a true one, and the Mary Broad did actually do all the things told in the storey, only embellished to bring it all to life.

Lesley Pearce searched through all of the records available from the 1700's which enabled her to follow Mary's life, and peace together what happened to her, and as Lesley writes in the final part of her book, it didn't seem right to presume what happened to Mary after the last known record of her, her character was so strong that it was easy enough for me to sit and work out what I hoped for her.

This is defiantly one for anyone that enjoys a good meaty storey, and although the 1700's are not usually a period I enjoy reading about, the stark difference between then and now just add to the storey.
