Menley Nichols and her husband Adam arrive on Cape Cod with their young daughter Hannah. What is supposed to be a holiday for them soon turns ... ...as it seems. The beautiful Remember House carries a tragic past that seems to be trying to breathe again through it's new inhabitants. Menley hears her baby boy calling to her and relives the moment of his death time and again till she fears she is headed for total breakdown. Is she putting her new baby and her whole family in danger?
Can Adam save his wife or will the tragedy of his past and the ghosts of Remember House claim some new victims?

Advantages: Good Plot Disadvantages: Not enough originality
...Is MaryHigginsClarke really the "Queen of Suspense" now or is she losing her touch? Her book RememberMe impressed me but her newest work Before I say Goodbye doesn't seem to meet the same standard.
I found Mary did something I myself would never consider doing. While introducing each character, she described them right away. Most of these descriptions were unnecessary and stereotypical. One opening description was "Deep in thought, she was oblivious to the admiring glances that came her way." That sentence alone has been overused so much that I refused to read any further that day. As a reader, I am used to better, subtler description methods. She follows this tactic several times throughout the first two chapters causing me to grow restless and skip past those parts.
Another problem that I had was the ending. It gripped me...

When Menley Nichols' two year old son is killed in a car accident, her life is torn apart. Not even husband Adam can offer solace. It seems Menley will never be able to come to terms with the death - until, that is, the birth of their daughter Hannah. Suddenly, there is a reason to move on. A reason to live. To allow both Menley and Hannah some relaxation, the Nichols' rent a holiday home in Cape Cod. It is idyllic. Calm. Tranquil. It doesn't last. Soon enough, horrifying events force Menley to once again face the death of her son. It seems someone - or something - doesn't want Menley to forget. As the situation spirals out of control, Menley finds herself fighting for her marriage, her sanity and, ultimately, for Hannah herself ...
