...Is Mary Higgins Clarke really the "Queen of Suspense" now or is she losing her touch? Her book Remember Me impressed me but her newest work Before I say Goodbye doesn't seem to meet the same standard. I found Mary did something I myself would never consider doing. While introducing each character, she described them right away. Most of these descriptions were unnecessary and stereotypical. One opening description was "Deep in thought, she was oblivious to the admiring glances that came her way." That sentence alone has been overused so much that I refused to read any further that day. As a reader, I am used to better, subtler description methods. She follows this tactic several times throughout the first two chapters causing me to grow restless and skip past those parts.
