Now, I’m not sure how other ladies would react to being presented with this by their beloved, but I was, as I’m sure you can appreciate, a little confused (and worried) about why he thought I’d like, or indeed need, such a contraption! At the beginning of last December, I was once again asked that tired old question by my husband, “What would you like for Christmas love?” My reply, (as per usual) was along the lines of “Oh, I don’t know, a surprise would be nice”. He continued to ask me several more times as the weeks went by and each time I gave him the same stock answer. Imagine my surprise (and shock), when on Christmas morning, he presented me with (along with other items, I must admit) a bikini line shaver!! This particular model was the Remington BKT 2500.
Now, I’m not sure how other ladies would react to being presented with this by their beloved, but I was, as I’m sure you can appreciate, a little confused (and worried) about why he thought I’d like, or indeed need, such a contraption! I made all the usual noises, of “Oh, thanks, it’s lovely”, to “Mmm, just what I needed”, and my husband looked happy and content that he’d made the perfect purchase. I naturally assumed that my husband thought I needed a ‘little trimming’, or maybe he wanted me to be more adventurous in the hedge-trimming department – either way, he’d never mentioned to me before, so I was a little perplexed! It wasn’t until later that evening, whilst my husband was out walking the dog that I found out what exactly had prompted my husband to make such a bizarre purchase – my daughter! She told me she needed one too, and that if I didn’t use it, it would always come in handy for her – charming!
I must admit, my old shaver was well past its use-by date. So old, in fact, that I had to summon up all my courage to use it around my ‘delicate areas’, as every time it went into action, it would grab not only the offending hair, but large chunks of my skin in the process, resulting in me having patchy areas and sore spots – not nice! I’ve never been a fan of depilatory creams either as I can’t stand the smell, so perhaps a new bikini line shaver was just what I needed!
Later the following day, I had a closer look at my new little shaver and checked the instruction manual. It all looked fairly straightforward to use. The shaver itself is fairly small and compact, approximately 7 inches in length and a lovely golden yellow colour on top, with a slightly paler yellow coloured on/off switch and position zoom wheel, for changing how close you would like your shave to be. The underside of the shaver is cream in colour and contains the battery cover. I was impressed that it came with 2 AAA batteries included but figured that at such a small size, I’d probably be forever changing them. Added to this is the fact that the shaver is not a rechargeable model, but as I’m not a greatly hairy person, I guessed that I’d probably be okay on the battery front.
As I stated earlier, on top of the shaver there is a five position ‘zoom wheel’, which means that the trim length can be changed to one of five different lengths. This can be achieved by simply turning the wheel to the desired setting. The wheel is to be turned clockwise for a shorter length and anti-clockwise for a ‘longer look’. The wheel clicks into place as it reaches each setting and the number setting appears on the length position indicator – easy really! There I also a trimmer comb and it’s important to remember that this must be attached to the shaver in order to use the hair length indicator.
I couldn’t believe how precise the hair settings are – I was spoilt for choice! I could have my pubes in a range of different lengths, from 3mm on a number one setting, to 12mm on a number five setting!! If I fancied something in between (say a 7mm setting) I simply had to turn the dial to number three – marvellous!! I’d never had so much control over my private hairy bits before!!
The next stage was to decide where to use my little contraption. I figured the best place was probably over the bath. This particular model cannot be used on wet skin, so it’s important to make sure that any areas you are shaving are completely dry. I stripped off, stood in the bath and got to work, remembering to lock the door behind me. I don’t care how many years I’ve been married, there are some things a woman just has to do in private, and shaving my pubes is definitely one of them!! I switched it on and was fairly taken aback at how loud a noise it made. Although in itself it is small in size and extremely lightweight, it is very noisy.
I did exactly as the instructions stated and turned the dial to number five, made sure the trimmer comb was in place and slowly slid the trimmer comb against my skin in the direction of the hair growth. It took me a little while to build up my confidence, because as I said previously, I’ve had a couple of bad experiences with shaving this area in the past and didn’t want any repeat performances. Once I got going, though, there was no stopping me!
Once I’d got rid of the ‘bulk’, I then set to work in ‘edging and shaping’ – this sounds like I’m trimming my garden privet, but I think it works along similar lines really. To edge and shape I simply had to attach the precision trimmer, remove the trimmer comb attachment, turn the trimmer on, hold it at a right angle to my skin and press down gently – I was then able to edge and shape to my heart’s desire. For a smoother look (and once I’d completely built up my confidence), I was able to go over the trimmed areas with the shaver foil to get a completely smooth, clean finish. It’s also recommended that you occasionally exfoliate after trimming as this helps to avoid the painful condition of in-growing hair – ouch!!
Caring for the shaver is as easy as using it really. It comes with its own little brush for cleaning out all those trapped hairs but I think it’s also important to rinse it through thoroughly each time I use it with warm water. The batteries, surprisingly, have lasted me a long time. I’d imagined having to change them much more frequently, but I find that once every few of months is all that’s needed. It’s a shaver that’s very small in size and fits neatly into my dressing table drawer. I’ve also taken it on holiday with me a couple of times, as it’s useful for ‘quick trims’ before hitting the beach.
As the months have gone on, and I’m so pleased with my shaver, I must say I have forgiven my husband for his unusual choice of purchase and needless to say, my daughter now has one of her own too!
I don’t know how much my husband paid for my shaver but I’ve seen it fairly recently in my local supermarket (Tesco) and I’ve also seen it advertised in Argos for the grand total of £9.99, and I’d say at that price it’s well worth it. It also comes with a full two years manufacture’s warranty, for complete peace of mind. The only down-side is that it is very noisy for such a small shaver but overall that wouldn’t put me off or stop me from recommending it to anyone. It’s light, compact, very easy to use and looks very attractive as it’s not over-bulky. All in all, a thoroughly good product!
