After several months of struggling to trim my pubes with rather blunt scissors, I decided to spend a whole Ģ10 on this trimmer from Amazon. It was definitely worth it, although I have a few bones to pick with the product.
The trimmer is girly light pink, nicely shaped, with two removable heads: a trimming head and a shaving head. Both are easy to put on and take off. The shaving head comes with a little cover, and the trimming head has a comb so that's also safe. A small brush is included as well as the mains charger and instruction leaflet, and the whole thing comes in a pink bag.
To start with the silly stuff, the bag is awful. Hideous pink and nasty shiny fabric, it's the tackiest thing I've seen in a long time, even beating my partner's poker trophy. It's much too big for the product, as it comes with the cardboard packaging actually inside the bag. This
is a minor issue, but products like this really do need to be kept in something, and I'll need to hunt down a better bag that won't take up half my cupboard or make me cringe when I catch sight of it. While we're on the subject of pink, I do wish the trimmer was in a more neutral colour. Apart from loathing pink and girly products myself, it makes it far more obvious that it's specifically a bikini trimmer.
The charger works fine, and the trimmer supposedly holds its charge for 40 min or so of happy cordless use. I haven't got as far as the second charging yet, nor have I been timing how long I use it for each time, but it's very quick to use so it's probably only a few minutes.
The trimmer is the main point of all this, and I am delighted with it. The shape is slim, easy to hold and to manoeuvre. It has a little wheel you turn at the side which moves the comb, so that it can be set to 3, 5, 7, 8 or 12 mm. This is easy to use and can be changed while the trimmer is actually on, and the on/off button is fine as well. It took me a little while to get the hang of positioning the trimmer correctly, partly because the instruction leaflet gave the wrong picture, but once I'd worked it out it was simplicity itself to use, and perfectly safe and comfortable for the whole pubic area. That said, you have to squat at an odd angle to use it (I prefer standing over the loo, minimal clear-up), but that's par for the course. I like using the 12 mm setting for my mons, and the 7 mm setting for my labia; I'm not sure what it's like if you are going for much shorter hair. I moisturise with aloe vera after using it and haven't had any irritation from the now-short, freshly-cut hair, whereas I hear that shaving or waxing can cause dreadful problems in that department.
The trimmer is supposed to be water-resistant and safe to use in the shower. At least, this is what it said on the Amazon page; nothing was mentioned in the instruction booklet, which generally had very little info. So I rang Remington, and was assured that it was indeed safe to use in the shower. Well, it might be safe, but it's a complete nuisance. I tried for a bit and then gave up as I wasn't getting anywhere. The idea had been to reduce mess, but since it wasn't particularly messy to begin with, there wasn't any point.
The shaver, on the other hand, didn't work wet *or* dry. I've always heard that electric shavers aren't that good, and this is probably one of the cheapest sort since it's essentially an extra feature thrown in for a product that is primarily a trimmer. After scraping away at my underarms for a good few minutes, I gave up and got about six times as many hairs off with one swipe of my razor. I'm guessing that most people are buying this as a trimmer not a shaver, but if you really want both functions you might be better off looking elsewhere or getting a separate shaver. I suspect that the other combi trimmers/shavers won't be much better, though.
I didn't realise until I'd used it a couple of times that you actually need to take the head off to clean it, you can't just clean the part you can see like you can with my epilator. This is where the small brush came into play, and I have to say now that it was disappointing, being too soft to do much. I spent quite a while fiddling with getting into the nooks and crannies under a running tap, all the while worried that the water was going to get in and wreck the motor. I became even more worried when I could hear water sloshing about inside. However, I eventually got most of the little hairs and the water out, and the trimmer hasn't died yet. If it does, I'm damn well going to demand a refund from Remington!
Overall, this does the job very nicely. I have one or two very minor niggles, but for Ģ10 I think it was an excellent deal.
