So, like every other woman/girl I love GHD's-I used a friend's once and was hooked-hers were a gift, but they cost from £95 from selected hair salons. Kept umming and ahhing whether to fork out for some, in the meantime used other people's!
When I was getting ready to go out one night, a friend had brought Remington 2xceramic straightners round-I used these and could not tell the difference between GHD'S.
Ok, these cost around £49.99 and you can get them from anywhere-Argos, Index etc. They heat up in around 10 seconds-it's only a few seconds more than GHD's anyway!
They have ceramic plated irons, and are fairly slim, they have an on/off sliding button, and a red light appears when they are switched on-the only downfal about these straighteners is that when you are using them, your thumb may turn them off again, but this shouldn't be too much of a problem!
When starightening hair, I have fairly thick hair and I find I need to run down my hair 1-2 times for it to be poker staright (this is when I have sectioned it), these heat upto an incredible heat (can't find the booklet but will find out for you!) so you do need to be careful when starting at the roots.
The irons have heat resistant parts in which you can safely hold them, and has an extremely long cable for ease of use.
They take around 20-25 minutes to cool down completely I would say, but they come with a special heat bag which also doubles up as a carrier. This bag is coated silver inside, and you simply place them in, after unplugging them, and this is a safe way to just leave them to cool down. I put them in, and then forget all about them (although if you do this and your house burns down, please don't blame me!) No, I have never had a problem with this at all.
The straighteners make your hairseem more sleek at the same time as straightening, and the flyaway, static you sometimes get is kept to a minimum-I am not sure if this is the straighteners, or the product I use to protect my hair.
I would highly recommend this product, as they cost half the price for the same result-you are effectively paying a exta £50 just for the GHD name.

P.S Straighteners will damage your hair after repeated use, so is always best to use a protective spray or cream-this helps minimise the damage. I use Loreal Hot Straight, and will write a quick op for you next!
If you need any more information on this product or any related ones, please leave a comment and I will change it!

(+) Funky pattern, quick to heat up, adjustable temperature, slim, lighweight (-) Have to prise them away from mum when I want to use them in the morning
I just had my hair cut, and the hairdresser used straighteners on my hair for the first time. Just trying to decide whether or not to get some, and if so which kind, as I loved the results. Suzy x

Sound good but I am happy with my GHDs at present. Maureen
Advantages: They have a little clip thing on base so it can rest on a platform without burning anything, they have a heat-proof bag to put them in once you've finished using them, you can choose the heat setting and they are cheaper than all others in their league. Disadvantages: None...yet!
Advantages: cheap, 60 second heat up, super smooth straight hair, lasts until you next wash your hair Disadvantages: after regular use the ceramic comes off as they are not solid only coated
