This is the taper lever, which enables you to fine tune the length of the blade. My hands are like shovels so I dont mind the hand set being so chunky, but for those ... ...and heavy side.
The Remington comes with 8 guide combs which determine how long or short the hair ends up. These are 25mm(1"), 18mm(3/4"), 12mm(1/2"), 9mm(3/8"), 7mm(1/4"), 3mm(1/8") and a left and right taper.
